What exactly is the point in soldering your own keyboard together? Seems to be a hassle getting decent parts.
>>
>>57471221
It's not that hard unless you want a custom plate, case and/or pcb.

I'm still trying to figure out how to design a decent acrylic and alu sandwich case I can get cut so I can make the keyboard I really want.
>>
>>57471221
most 60% boards like the poker are not fully programmable and don't support exotic layouts.
i started this build because i wanted a board to put my OG cherry dyesubs on, which is ISO and has 1.5u modifiers

New to mkb, thinking of buying either Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro L or Steelseries Apex M500.

where can I get some cheap keycaps?
the chinese are trying to jew out like 40 bucks for a set and I'm 100% sure the chinese caps aren't worth that much since some of them are selling 37 keycap sets for like 4 bucks

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-New-Side-printed-Top-printed-Blank-for-PBT-37-Keycaps-plus-Spacebar-Keycap-Puller-Rainbow/32764054196.html

these are pretty cheap too for a 104-set but the colors are disgusting.
I'm sure around 10 bucks would be the real price for something like this in china

Magnetic sensor. It's a non-contact switch used in industrial environments.
>>
>>57472256
its a magnet that trips a sensor. They are more reliable then cherry switches due to the simplicity. Old Hall effect switches found on Honeywell keyboards had a life cycle of 30,000,000,000 compared to the 50,000,000 on cherry. These ones aren't as good I can grantee you, but I won't be surprised if they last longer then cherry again due to their simplicity

I currently have mx browns and I want to switch to clears. Do they have the same scratchy/sandy feeling like browns? They seem to work the same just with harder springs right?
>>
>>57472875
Only thing about any Model M is that its only 2kro(not including modifiers afaik) wich is really bad for gaming, thats why i had to get a Model F.
>>
>>57471563
I recommend you to go to you local tech store, they usually have many keyboards you can try out and find a switch you like.
If you know what switch you like it becomes much easier to find a keyboard you would like.

I myself recently bought an Noppo Lolita Spyder with brown switches, I think it's pretty good.

Personally I'd wait until Black Friday/ Cyber Monday before buying a keyboard.

No if you have no patience you can get a ducky shine 5 for the same price as the cooler master, and it comes with much higher quality doubleshot keycaps compared to the laser etched ones on the CM board. Apex m500 is decent.

That is double of the price of this keyboard.
>>
>>57473367

Rebind FN to L_Ctrl, then rebind Caps to Ctrl as normal:

-Unplug your Pok3r.
-Flip DIP 4 to "on".
-Plug your Pok3r back in and be VERY CAREFUL. Mistakes here usually require you to reset your layer, losing all that stuff you did before.
-First press Fn. Then press L_Ctrl. (That L_Ctrl key is now bound to Fn.)
-Now press Pn. Then press Pn again, assuming you don't want to move it. If you want to move it, then press that key instead.
-SUPER CRITICAL NOTE: Once you've flipped DIP 4, you must bind both Fn and Pn or else you can end up with one of them completely unbound which will require a reset of ALL layers. Hold both ALT keys for 5 seconds until the LED stops blinking.
-Now flip DIP 4 back to "off".
T-est your shit and make sure that works!
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you move your Fn to L_Ctrl, your "real" Fn key will automatically function as a Win key. In the case that you move your Pn key, it gets replaced by an App key. For a more complete expansion on what's happening here, see spoonraker's helpful comment.

You can get Korean customs like the duck Lightsaver (pic related), but those are expensive. The RS model F is also similar and its cheaper, but you'd have to source the parts from china

Hey /mkg/

I have had pic related for a couple years now and about 2 months ago the left CRTL key stopped working properly. Basically, the switch will not detect a press unless it is perfectly vertical when pressed, any lateral force whatsoever and it does nothing, it will also stop detecting a press when lateral force is applied while it's pushed down.

I was wondering what the difficulty is in acquiring a replacement switch and swapping it out (I have no soldering experience nor do I currently own any of the necessary tools).

Alternatively, have any of you ever heard of this issue happening before with a switch? Is there a potential solution to this problem, maybe by sticking something under the keycap to prevent all lateral movement?

Thanks!
>>
I'm currently using an old Dell keyboard I got for free when a school library ditched all its furniture, including computers, because of mold. It still has all the keys, but Return feels a bit wobbly. Given how much time I spend at the computer, I thought I could justify buying in a new one.
So, I'm thinking of trying out these mechanical meme keyboards people are always raving about. The options I'm specifically looking at are
>Turtle Beach Impact 600, MX Brown switches, 69.90e
>Logitech G410, Romer-G switches, 64.90e
The both look decent enough, but the latter is missing a numpad. Of course, I can always get an external numpad, so that's not a deal breaker, and I have some token respect for Logitech as a brand. They made my mouse, and it works well enough.

Is either of these blatantly shit? Are both? Should I just stick with the old keyboard?

>Romer-G switches
Don't bother with those Omron has always had problems manufacturing mechanical switches since forever and these are no exception. Not to mention that when your keycaps wear out finding high quality replacements would be impossible.

Now if you want you can get an old Dell AT101w with alps switches for cheap on places like eBay. But if you want brand new for that price you can get keyboards from Cooler Master, Rosewill, and Steelseries. I have never heard of Turtle beach keyboards, but they look like re brands of those Taiwanese keyboards you find for cheap on Taobao

Now if you want you can buy keyboards from China that have all sorts of features like programmable RGB lighting and macro support for cheap.

They definitely feel better and honestly I can never go back to ABS key caps again.
However when I was looking at reviews people said the key caps were fading. When I asked online I got replies like:
>Shut the fuck up faggot these are dye-sub PBT and the legends will never fade. Fuck off and go back to plebbit

Since I got a lot of these I thought that all those reviews were just trolls and I pulled the trigger. Then behold after one week of use the keycaps began to fade away on some of the keys. The weird thing was that these keys were barely used. Later I found out that these keycaps have a problem with bleaching and it quite common actually. So all those reviews online were right, but its still a great keyboard. I was planing on replacing the keycaps anyway with PBT SA profile so I don't mind as much

I think this would probably work based on the issue (assuming razer switchs can be taken apart the same way). Does anyone know where to buy a razer switch, having difficulty finding some and they don't seem to sell parts on their site.

Are there any Cherry switch's that are suitable replacements for a razer switch's if I can't find the parts?

Can someone explain the purpose of backlights to me? I don't own a mechanical keyboard so I have no idea what use those lights are except for maybe being able to see the keys in a dark room but even then I never need to look at the keyboard when I type.
>>
>>57480248

RGB backlighting is for ricing purposes only
Solid color is for seeing better than decals in the dark

If you know anything about touch typing, then it's pretty pointless, but they include it on loads of models just because they can.

>>
>>57480248
>being able to see the keys in a dark room but even then I never need to look at the keyboard when I type.

It's less for typing in the dark, more for gaming in the dark.

RGB is mainly aesthetic but many keyboards have different modes that light up and color code different keys depending on the game.

I've had this Noppo choc mini with blue switches for a few weeks now and I love it. I've only ever used reds and much prefer the blues because I don't bottom them out nearly as hard. I find myself looking for excuses to type and have completely stopped using my laptop at home because it is so enjoyable. It has a hardware switch for control and capslock, having capslock act as control is awesome. Much more comfortable for keyboard shortcuts and keybinds in vidya. The same goes for the function keys, I find them much more comfortable to reach than on a standard layout. The only downside is that I make less errors on my laptops membrane keyboard but I still average roughly the same wpm. The key caps feel really nice, I've never owned such good quality ones before.

Anyway I highly recommend this board for anyone who plays games that require a lot of keybinds or wants to try blues.

ALPS switches are wobbly by design. It's specifically meant to reduce binding and the need for lube. It works so well they completely stopped using lube after the mid-80s.

The tightest switches you can find are space invaders but they bind like motherfuckers on offcenter presses even lubed.

i don't think there's any difference in build quality. I think it's the PBT keycaps that vary in quality control control between different HHKBs. they're harder to manufacture and have poor yield.

look at the keys on this PBT board. it's the price we pay for good texture feel

that static piece of shit? "customizable"? I bet it doesn't even have on-board hardware for remapping and key macros, and you think it's more efficient and customizable than what I posted?
>>

you obviously never looked into the concept of the malt layout. Try it out on an ergodox, you barely ever leave the homerow and you don't move your hands. There's over 7k words you can write in malt without leacing the home row.

affordable datahands would be interesting but probably still more handstrain than maltron desu.

I would like to read some anecdotes from /mkg/ regarding their experiences with 122 key keyboards.

I have become tired of constantly having to use shortcuts while working and browsing. I'm hitting the shortcuts for copy, past, cut, undo, redo, find, close, maximize, and switch windows hundreds of times a day. It's exhausting. I have actually begun to wear out the left ctrl key switch on my AT101W.
I have thought about getting a keyboard with some function keys to the side and mapping those keys to perform these actions.

I am not really such a fan of buckling springs keyboards, so I don't think I'd go with one of the big Model M or F terminal keyboards. Any other suggestions, possibly with black Alps key switches?

I've learned from buying these things that I can't fucking stand it when the letter and symbol keys are blank, but I prefer the modifier/special keys (like escape) blank or pimped, and I don't really care for either laser or printed on keys, but from the side of the key, it looks okay.

I really want an 80% profile keyboard instead of 60%, I really can't stand these anymore because I use the function keys and arrow keys all the time when navigating/playing games.

I guess 60% is good for programmers, but they suck for just about everything else.

I still have an original KBD poker, wondering what to get next in the future...

Any suggestions?
