I don't agree, I installed gentoo last week and I am having lot's of fun with it. It's a good learning experience for me to understand the various components of my laptop better and to understand how computers work.

By reading and understanding the portage man pages I guess. There are MANY ways to speed up compilation time, including parallel merging/installing, distributed computing, giving every make command -j(cpucount) and putting everything into tmpfs. Seriously, the only slow thing is getting everything up and running the first time because you don't know what you're doing. Don't tell me you can't use your pc while it takes ten minutes to update everything in the background? You can even limit how much resources portage uses in the background to upgrade.
