Tomorrow will be the largest DDoS attack in history. Most likely from the famous Marai botnet, but there are several variants since the sources got leaked. This morning we saw significant degradations in Level3's infrastructure, before that we saw "dress rehearsals" on DynDNS and Akamai. Whether the organization behind this botnet is government, foreign, or independent, the motive is the same; to cause havoc and confusion on the day of the most significant election in decades. If AWS were targeted we could see the largest hosting provider taken out, along with up to 65% of the world's internet traffic. If L3 and/or AT&T were taken out we could see outages across the USA and even Canada.
This could be the 21st century equivalent of Franz Ferdinand. Download all your data from Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, etc. Make sure any """IoT""" devices you have that could be susceptible are powered off.
I could be wrong, but there's a small chance I could be right. I really don't want to be right this time.

LOL I stopped reading there.
AWS is probably THE most resilient, secure public system around. They run on a Region + Availability Zone system, where each Region has it's own set of Availability Zones (AZ) to act as backup networks. Each AZ is powered by independent electrical grids. Not to mention each of these server locations are in huge unmarked buildings, with max security and heavy monitoring and highly secure access/privilege systems for the personnel.
If there were ever a mega-catastrophic event like nuclear war / asteroid on half the planet, AWS would still be up and running on whatever surviving life there is on this planet.
Taking down AWS basically means taking down all the electrical grids in the world, as well as the backup systems of the backup systems of the backup systems of the...
It's just not possible unless you're AWS yourself.

Sure, so AWS is hard to take down. But you have to remember, the weakest link breaks the chain. If the backbone itself is compromised like we've seen it doesn't matter if their DCs are still up.
