I'm doing consulting work adding "telemetry" to a future update of a very common networked embedded device. The company is doing no announcements that the devices are going to start reporting back daily usage and location. Am I evil? Am I enabling the slow march toward a cyberpunk dystopia?
>>
>>57420999
sabotage it
>>
Can a 1 armed man defeat a man with no thumbs in a boxing match
>>
>Am I evil
Yes
The worst part is that you can't even tell.
>>
>>57421024
I cant. It's going to be subject to a code review at some point. A silent update is going to start probing your network (to identify usage of competing products and such) and sending back every single menu click.

Millions of people are about to unknowingly join the botnet
>>
>>57421105
This is legit horrifying
>>
>>57421134
The worst part is that the PM said he didn't want the "overhead" of SSL despite our complaints, so all reporting is going to be in plain text.
>>
>>57420999
What is the device?
If you don't want to answer that one, is it something the average american has in their home?
>>
>>57420999
ANON
Get the fuck on TOR leak it to a whistle blowing organisation ASAP.
>>
>>57421167
yup

tell stallman or the eff about this
>>
>>57421166
I can't answer that. It depends what you mean by average. It's not in everyone's home but if you have a moderate income and like "gadgets"/consumer electronics chances are you or someone you know has one.
>>
>>57421167
yeah i would whistle blow that, your boss is a piece of filth.
>>
>>57421167
this
If it's not a small enough project that they can somehow suspect you pls leak
Think about what RMS would do in your situation
>>
>>57421204
or he could just call up alex jones
>>
>>57421212
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_av2IuCaLs8
>>
>>57420999
Is there a prompt to enable or disable it during initial set up?
>>
>>57421256
It's supposed to be secret since it scopes out for other products on your network. There's no way to notice it even exists except packet sniffing.
>>
>>57421212
No. Do not encourage unreliable sources by giving them reliable information.
>>
>>57421271
Well, is that breaking a law? It could be against the law depending on the kind of information it reports. Companies don't offer the option to opt out out of charity.
>>
>>57421281
I don't really know. All I know is that we were told the user is not supposed to know it's happening.
>>
>>57421194

How does it get location data, just IP geolocation? Can you tell us if it has a GPS chip in it or not or would that reveal too much?
>>
>>57420999

Wait for the project to end.

Contact journalists.

Leak the info anonymously.

Just make sure nothing can be traced back to you directly.
>>
>>57421299
Just a geoIP lookup on our side. The boards do have onboard GPS but it's disabled since we don't use it and it was just included on the board design.
>>
obvious its the amazon push button reorder thing
>>
It's either Echo or Google Home related, isnt' it?
>>
>>57421194

Oh, roleplaying thread then. kys faggot.
>>
>>57421328
>>57421337
No, I imagine these are already botnet enough.
>>
>>57420999
In telemetry you can obfuscate data, so if you're concerned about privacy just do that.
>>
>>57421358

I don't know if you're OP or not but it's likely either a smart home device or one of those normie streaming boxes like the Roku or Slingbox. Maybe game consoles but those have always had telemetry.
>>
>>57421158

great news for le hax0rs and le nsa
>>
>>57421105
>A silent update is going to start probing your network (to identify usage of competing products and such) and sending back every single menu click

>every single menu click

>Millions of people are about to unknowingly join the botnet

Ok, so it's probably Google, maaaaybe Apple. Likely, it is Android related.
>>
>>57421397
It is OP. It does in fact "stream" things. That's all I'm going to say. Not a game console. Not something hugely popular but our internals end up in a lot of products under a lot of different brands.

>>57421391
We have a full inventory of what is to be collected and stored. Can't change those.
>>
>tfw if that was me you could skip the 2nd panel because I'm always in front of my radiation emitter
>>
>>57421294
If you care that much, do the good Samaritan thing and look it up. Maybe a laywer might be willing to give you advice on it for cheap or free if you search for one who cares about this stuff.
>>
>>57421414
>It does in fact "stream" things

Amazon Firestick/Chromecast/Roku Streaming Stick
>>
>>57421423

He's going to get thrown under a bus either way because someone else will inevitably discover what's happening.

>>57421443

It's probably the Roku one. Amazon and Google devices have had telemetry from day one and I doubt they'd outsource the development of such to a third party consulting firm in the first place.
>>
>>57420999
People who use proprietary software deserve this.
>>
>>57421158
That's so idiotic, doesn't he know the point of botnets is that you SECURE information so that your company can sell it, not give it all away for free.
>>
>>57421472
That's what I feel too. It's how I rationalize this to myself. They gave me a unit to take home but I'm writing my own malware. I'll probably regift it for Christmas.
>>
So what is the main purpose of this update? 'Telemetry' is very broad.
>>
>>57421558
See
>>57421105

It probes your network. Also reports back usage and such

It gets easier when you embrace what you've done. Spreading your tainted seed across million upon millions of homes is an achievement, even if it's an achievement in evil.

>>57421558

Selling your usage data. Google owns the world because they have a complete profile of you as an individual, and everyone else has realized that they can do the same thing with a small bit of effort.
>>
>>57421516
>That's what I feel too. It's how I rationalize this to myself. They gave me a unit to take home but I'm writing my own malware.
this is some farenheit 451 shit.
>>
>>57421583
>>57421599
>(to identify usage of competing products and such) and sending back every single menu click

I don't understand. Do you mean "menu clicks" from within, say, the Firestick for example? Or, through an OS or browser?
>>
>>57420999
can people sue the living shit out of you for forcing something without agreeing to the terms of use.
>>
>>57421649
yes actually, and it'll be especially easy if they're doing it with plaintext
>>
>>57421629
It's menu clicks in the device itself. Earlier the higher ups wanted to do packet sniffing and all that to figure out what people are playing on other devices and which accounts they were using but it got scratched off the table when the engineers told them the difficulty of this.
>>
>>57421725

Thanks anon.
>>
Get the job and build their trust until they let you do whatever you want. Then, if you ever quit, weeks before you leave, force it to be licensed as GPL. you make all your money and then when you're gone, everyone else wins.
>>
>>57421807
There's already a contract in place deciding the ownership of the code. I'm a consultant.
>>
Leak it to whistleblowers via TOR with Trisquel so that you can be RMS and Snowden's lovechild

>>57421883
It's a "smart" Blu-ray player, but the internals and software get licensed off by dozens of companies and Chinese clones. Even some TV's have it embedded. I can't go into brand specifics since there are only a few companies that unlatch this description.
>>
>>57420999
Well, yes. Your company is disrespecting their users then. Good for your company most people doesn't know shit about computer except for using the web browser and maybe office, we can't have nice things due to that.
