I'm looking at buying a new laptop and I want to get the best/fastest processor I can. I currently have a core2duo 2.2ghz but I'm completely lost with the current processors.
For example:

and
http://ark.intel.com/products/43560/Intel-Core-i7-620M-Processor-4M-Cache-2_66-GHz
I had assumed that a i7 would be better than an i3 but the i3 looks faster from what I can tell.
What should I be looking out for? Any common things to avoid.
I thought all i7s had 4 cores?

There's a five year difference between those two
Holy shit do some research, also the "best" laptop CPU is some Xeon that costs a few hundred bucks alone

I usually don't recommend watching Linus, but here's a good explanation by him

Use this site

Kinda good for comparing CPU's

No. Many i7's don't have more than two cores.

here comes the lenovo shills

Much i7 are just i5 at a higher clock speed on laptop

I would recommend a balance, first stat you budget an then explain what do you intend to use it for

Going to be using it for general use but also music production. It's hard to give a budget because the country I am currently living had high import tax so $300 for you is going to be different to what I can get for the same money. Looking for the typical magical bargain of high performance for little cash.

That's a Skylake desktop processor vs a Nehalem mobile processor.

For these two linked though, considering the i3 has a higher base frequency than the turbo boost max freq of the i7, wouldn't that mean that the i3 would be faster? I know it doesn't have turbo boost but would that make a difference in this case?

Well, they are both in laptops I've been looking at.

Maybe, but the i3 is a desktop CPU wit a high TDP
