In which case, use a separator element, make it transparent and expandable.

Run "plank --preferences" in command line to see the settings.

But plank is oversimplified, and you're much better off with Docky. With Docky just check the box for Panel mode and off you go. It does move the trash and power down the end.

anon is correct in the sense that I should forget about docks when I am not using their smart hiding or making whole panels out of them...
