I want to mount a WiFi receiver on a boat so I can pick up city networks from kilometres away, but I can't find any info on making large WiFi receivers.

Could I convert a whole lot of coathangers into a long range WiFi receiver?

How can you post if Google is broken?

Dumshit....
>>
You can't catch WiFi signals from a kilometer away. They are not designed to transmit that far. Any residual signal you might get is useless
>>
>>57410159
If the signal is half as strong, just catch signal with twice as large an area.
>>
>>57410214
the signal is far less than half as strong

>so I can pick up city networks from kilometres away
That's nice but they don't transmit that far, even if you make your receiver powerful enough to transmit to them.

They call it windy Wellington for a reason.
>>
>>57410613
That's one reason why I want a large receiver, and not a small receiver with a dish.
Although the wind in Wellington has been weak of late, and the real reason is because a large dish would be hard to get.
>>
Why not just get a decent 4g plan and set that up on the boat?
Surely a lot less hassle and probably faster as well?

I'm not made of money, it's multiple dollars a gigabyte for mobile data.
>>
>>57410770
That's using small devices to boost a tiny range to a short range.
I'm wanting to construct a large device to get a huge range.
>>
>>57410613
What if op does a dish to send from the city and a dish to receive on the boat?
>>
>pick up city networks from kilometres away
That's not how attenuation works
>>
>>57410807
Sure let me just rent a room in every city I pass
>>
>>57410214
Power drops of as an inverse square function of the distance, 1/r^2
>>

And a typical WiFi antenna is tiny.
Getting 2500 times the receptiveness for 50 times the range isn't entirely unrealistic, if you can find a cheap way to lengthen an antenna.

50 times the range would give you internet access 20-30 kilometres out to sea in Wellington.
