I have read this statement in the last couple of months on /g/ a few too many times.

Let me tell you something: you can. Easily. In fact you can steam 1080p video from youtube on a C2D without any issues.

If your computer has a CPU from this generation and you are getting choppy video that is on you. Your OS is not configured properly, or you CPU is overheating.

You can actually stream 1080p even on a Core 2 (not duo) just the same.

A Pentium 4 will handle 1080p video if you know how to set things up properly. Streaming 720p should be quite possible, and 1080p netflix will come through too. And none of that is taking GPU acceleration into consideration.

Yeah i've seen this a lot and it's bullshit. Mine handles it just fine.

>>
720p is possible on my T42 with a 2ghz Pentium M

fool
>>
>>57407859
1080 should be possible if you use the right codec and bitrate for your video.

mpeg-2 is very light on the CPU at the cost of file size. That's how satellite and cable receivers can decode it.
>>
>>57407819
Use vlc or mpv to stream the videos. My ancient Atom netbook can stream HD video using it.
>>
Intel shills in full effect today, I see.
>>
Intel Core 2 Duo M540 @ 2.5ghz with 4gb of memory here.

I'm able to play three different 1080p videos on youtube at once without chopping. This is on a Thinkpad X201 running xubuntu and chromium.
>>
>>57407819
>Let me tell you something: you can. Easily.
Ok.

>If your computer has a CPU from this generation and you are getting choppy video that is on you.
So which is it? Should it play "easily" or does it require some level of proficiency to get it working?
>>
>>57407935
it did fucking kill my battery tho lel
>>
>>57407947
The level of proficiency is not being a dumb ass with a million other things running at the same time.
>>
>>57407968
So your saying iOS and Vista Starter is the only correct path?
>>
>>57407935
wait a second

I'm retarded. I'm on the i5 laptop. But trust me the Core 2 Duo T400 I have can play 1080p on youtube just fine.
>>
>>57407935
off topic but hows your x201? Would you recommend it?
>>
>>57407973
The braindead way of doing it is downloading ubuntu and then not installing anything beyond what it comes with or asks you to update.
>>
>>57407987
It's excellent but I think you can get a X220 pretty cheap these days and the battery life on those is supposed to be a lot better. I paid $10 for this one so can't complain
>>
>>57407968
>The level of proficiency is not being a dumb ass
OP states that too many people are claiming "You can't stream 720p video from youtube on a Core 2 Duo". And then goes on to say it is easy.

I'm just being a wise-ass. But if it was easy, then you wouldn't have people posting about it so often.
>>
Yeah... I went over and tried it on the T400 with a Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26ghz with 2gb of RAM and it was a different story.

Only one 1080p stream was sustainable. The second stream really lagged and chopped. Still pretty good, and if you used external players I'm sure you could do better.
>>
>>57407819
Bullshit
I was able to stream 1080p on a pentium 4, though it was laggy, it still played it
>>
>>57407819
You have to keep in mind that the average user even on /g/ doesn't have things very well optimized. Instead they are running a handful of AVs and all kinds of bloatware in the background. It wouldn't surprise me if they sap enough CPU resources that even 720p streaming fails for them.
>>
>>57407999
I saw one for $175. One of the cheapest I can get in my country.
>>
>>57408044
>Still pretty good, and if you used external players I'm sure you could do better.

I just tested it and I was able to open four 1080p streams and have them all play smoothly at the same time with VLC player on the P8400.
>>
>>57408095
I go ahead and get a X201 for $100 instead of that.
>>
I had terrible youtube lag even at 360p on pentium 4.
>>
>>57408371
That's your fault.
>>
>>57407859
480p videos struggled on my t40 with a 1.5ghz pentium m
>>
>>57407859
I can do 720 through VLC on a 650MHz PIII.
>>
You can, i live with that shit.
>>
>>57408006
"User friendly" and "ignorance friendly" are two different things.

"User friendly" means it's easy to change the settings once you have learned how. "Ignorance friendly" means "just buy a new computer go- I mean, guy."
>>
>>57407819
Finally someone who isn't an autist discussing the C2Duos. They can also run most modern games at Ultra with a good video card and adequate RAM.
>>
>>57407819
Maybe they meant with Flash?
Because flash is shit and because worst on old hardware as time gone by?
>>
>>57409365
Can you play Civ 6 with a E8400?

I can watch YouTube on pic related, a core duo (not core 2 duo) in 1080p, only struggles when the video is 720p @ 60fps
>>
>>57407819
I remember streaming 720 video from a Core Duo T2400. That statement is horseshit.

C2D MBP mid 2009, full hd streaming works just fine.
>>
>>57407819
It depends on the GPU for the most part, many people running Core 2 are using onboard chipset graphics.
>>
>>57407819
720p you can. 1080p though...
>>
>>57409739
I have an intel processor clocked at 900mhz and it struggles with any youtube video streaming whatsoever... like youtube 360p is sometimes unwatchable (lower quality doesn't help) however strangely enough it's fine (even like 480p or more) if you watch tv shows on some of the russian/other obscure websites that run different players...
