is 30 too old to start learning programming and/or networking and find a career in the tech industry?

my work history is mostly minimal wage cucking unrelated to tech, up until this point

I don't have any university qualifications so I'll probably have to go back to school at some point in addition to working full or part time.

I'm more worried that given my age I will have a hard time competing with millenialshits for junior, entry level positions or even internships.

so I might be cockblocked before I can even get in the door.

how many millenial interns have you exploited this year?
>>
>>57407750
as somone who works in IT and is close to burnout, my advice is don't work in IT. There's so much bologna you have to deal with like arbritary deadlines set by people who don't understand tech.

If you like programming as a hobby, or networking (like having a server rack in your home) then I don't recommend doing these things for money because it will ruin your enjoyment of them.

I'm seriously thinking about quitting all this stress and just working somewhere like Wal*Mart where there is zero stress, you don't have to take your job home with you, and you can spend your free time doing fun tech projects.

The pay of course will be laughably worse, but IMO I think we all have too much shit as it is. If you can cover a car payment, mortgage/rent/utilities, internet blil & food I think we're good to go
>>
>>57407778
What defines millenialism anyway?
>>
>>57408108
you won't be able to cover all that working at wal mart.
>>
>>57408108
what exactly is IT? I see it thrown around a lot but it's pretty vague on its own.
>>
>>57407750
You're asking people that are under 23. I'm 30 as well and sadly have been here for about 11 years. These kids are morons.

No it's not too late. I work in IT for Luxottica. Don't do it. Deadlines set by retards that don't understand anything. Etc etc
>>
>>57408118
Millenials are ~1980 - 2000 births, Gen X is 1960 - 1980, Baby Boomers are 1940 - 1960 births, Silent Generation is 1920 - 1940, Greatest is 1900 - 1920

I've worked in all sorts of knuckle dragger jobs. while they aren't "stressful" they are dull and you feel like you're wasting your life away for nothing, on top of shit pay and sometimes hard labor. plus the thought of being a week's pay from moving into a trailer park is pretty stressful.
>>
>>57408307
This is relatively true. Except for the fact that a 7 year split is almost certain that two people have nearly nothing in common going up. Generations are split this way. Do a little more research kiddo.
>>
>>57408334
what research? he asked for a definition and i gave him one of the most commonly accepted ones. The only difference between a 24 year old millennial is a 34 year old one is that the 24yo still foolishly clings to hope
>>
>>57408307
>20 year generation defined by people born in the second half of it
>>
>>57408360
That's not it at all, a generation lives in the world shaped by their predecessors. The Silent Generation didn't choose to go through a shit depression and then a huge fucking war, the people older than them decided that. Then they decided their kids weren't going to live through that hell so they set up all sorts of policies for the Boomers, etc. You finding millennials and 90s kids memes annoying is irrelevant to anything

>>
>>57407750
No, in 3 months I was able to get a dev job using java.
My friend got a web dev job after a month and a half from scratch.
>>
>>57407750
No. I'm 32 years old and I'm a senior level engineer at a Fortune 500 tech company, but I didn't get serious about working in the tech industry until about two years ago. I have a humanities degree and am mostly self-taught with regard to tech. That's a lot more common than you might think.

Age doesn't matter and most fresh college grads are completely incompetent. All that matters is whether you know what you're doing. Getting your foot in the door may be a bit of a challenge, but there are so many companies desperate for good engineers and programmers that it shouldn't be too hard.

If you have no IT-related work experience, taking some classes isn't a bad idea. If you've made some serious contributions to an open source project, or have done some other significant work on your own, that's even better. Apply to interesting-sounding positions even if you don't meet the minimum requirements. You never know who might be willing to give you a chance. I have a couple open positions right now, so who knows, maybe I'll hire you.

>>57408468
how could a humanities grad get hired as engineer? or are you doing more project management/middle manager kind of work?

most of the engineers I know all had engineering or science backgrounds and even though they had all the schooling it was mostly in house training and certifications they got on the job that qualifies them for the work they do.
>>
>>57408597
>are you self taught? how old are you are your friend?
Yes. I'm 21 and my friend is 22
>>
>>57407750

No, but you'll need to spend almost every free moment you have learning.

>>57408046

Just one. Do they even count as millenials if they're fresh off the boat from India?
>>
>>57408495
I would like to say, but connecting the company to 4chan may not be a great career move.

>>57408597
No, I work in a pure engineering position, mostly R&D. The fact that I have a humanities degree doesn't mean I've never taken any courses in the sciences or engineering. More importantly though, I learned about software and systems engineering on my own time and distinguished myself based on the type and quality of work I did.

Like I said, getting your foot in the door can be a challenge. A random person with a CS degree will have a much easier time getting a tech job than a random person without one, but ultimately skills matter more. There are lots of people who didn't get much out of their degree programs, and there are lots of very talented people who don't have degrees at all.
>>
>>57407750
I got into IT at 28 as helpdesk. Now I'm a Sysadmin at 31.

Contrary to 4chan's "degree in Mathematics with 300K starting salary at the ripe age of 18"-- you don't need to worry about age too much in the real world. Just apply yourself efficiently and work on your people skills.

OP I'm 29. Tired of current career. Got my CCNA a month ago. Teaching myself everything. Aiming for an MSP meatgrinder position. 30 is nowhere near too late. Watch Eli The Computer Guy on youtube. He did a q&a video and answered your exact question.
>>
>>57407750
Programming and yeah maybe too old but networking should be fine if you're apt. I've been in IT for about 10 years and I've seen a bunch of ex-chefs and car salesmen transition to IT really well as they were all smart guys.

It's never too late if you are autistic.
And by that i mean, you are ready to obsessively learn and implement at least 10 hours a day for a year or two. 2 days a week where you don't learn anything, but make whatever shit you can out of what you have already learned (make anything, so long as it works and uses what you learned from the top of your head, and so long as you can make it work).
If you can do that, you will pretty much leave at least 90% of the codefaggots on /g/ who have any skills in dust.

Consider any insults going your way as competitive fear.
>>
>>57409188
>And by that i mean, you are ready to obsessively learn and implement at least 10 hours a day for a year or two.
Bull shit. 10 hours a day for a month or two and you should be well above being able to get an entry level job.
>>
>>57407750
>30
>old to do anything
what are you, a faggot?
>>
>>57409213
It's tougher for 30 year olds to learn than younger people m8.
Besides, that month or two you said is good for web coding and shit,
but not proper programming. He still has to pick a specialization as well. And review lots of highschool maths which will take about 3 or 4 months which will help immensely.
The reason i add this is simple: Don't forget John Carmack accomplished all that shit he did by utilizing nothing but math he learned in highschool, by his own words.

Wrong, it's easier for 30 year old to learn than children, especially if you are interested in what you are learning.

Only reason people say that is money issues.
>>
>>57407750
Yes, don't even bother if you haven't been programming since your teens.
>>
>>57407815
Being born in 1986 means you were 14 when the year 2000 came. Thus you were still a child by then, thus you are a millennial. You grew up in the same decade as the millennials, you lived in the same world so you are one. Thats what birthcohorts are about.

i think the easiest is to start with some web dev bootcamp, start fooling around CSS, it should be easy esp if you have some sense for design and symmetry. They you can go to PHP or why not .net mvc, you can easily get a project up and running and then you just have to customize it. Or why not wordpress, the most popular cms out there...
Where are your strengths, anon ?
>>
>>57409298
Generation Y(Millennials) is generation that came to age around 2000+-8year

Generation Z are people who came to age around 2020+-8years

see how this works?
>>

Ditto. i was looking at a Junior High math book the other day and was like "Shit, I don't even remember being taught some of this".

Like language, math is something you need to use to keep and the fact of the matter is that for a lot of people you don't use more than basic operations in your day to day life.
You just don't look at a triangle and think "I wonder what the hypotenuse use" or "I wonder what the angles are of that obtuse triangle".
Definitely if you go into certain work environments that sort of stuff is required but then of course you will be using it so you will remember it.

>>
Ok guys what should I do? I'm 27 and have an associates in computer information systems. I have no real work experience in IT or programming. I have no side projects or a portfolio. Right now I work full time with my father in our own company. I make good money and there may be an opportunity soon to make way more than I'd ever make in the corporate world. To get my bachelors I would need to take 8 more classes and go another $9k in debt. Is it worth it just for a backup or do I just say fuck it and just have the associates?
>>
>>57413426
>me basically the same as this guy but with a CS degree and NEET

Though, if you already make good money, why bother cucking yourself for a bachelor's? Here's the thing: if what you make is equal or more than the median salary of an IT job at your state, it's not worth it.

If you're adamant about it, get certificates from CompTIA or something.

I'm making the a little bit more than what I would probably get at an entry level programming job. I also only really work like half a month to make that. The problem is this opportunity to make much more may or may not happen and the nature of the business is it could collapse at any time and then I'd be jobless and fucked aside from my savings, which I save a lot.

Then, keep some savings in reserve and if the job dries up, take that opportunity to go back to school and finish that degree. Sounds like you only have a year left. With some financial aid and your savings, you may be able to make it.

In the meantime, use some of your free time to learn and practice your skills. Learn programming or set up a VM and try stuff out.
