When do we get battery technology for laptops that doesn't massively degrade in 6 months to a year?

Never. We're all cucks to degrading batteries in smartphones and laptops alike so we're forced to upgrade
That's what you get for buying consumer hardware and not business.

You don't, that's the price you pay for the energy density of lithium-based batteries.
Device makers like it this way because 1.) they want to make sure their gadgets wear out and people are forced to buy new ones, and 2.) they know that thinness sells better than durability.

That already exists.

We had it, a decade ago, but nowadays companies want to milk you as much they can, so shitty batteries is one way.
it's been available on the macbook pro with retina display for at least 3 years

I second this
It's all about how you use the device.
Primarily how hot you get it, if you constantly play vidya on a macbook the battery is going to be toast after a year.
