This is probably a stupid idea but is it possible to change a Micro-B usb plug to a type-A? Perhaps cut and solder the right connections on the cables without messing with plugs?
Obviously I could get an adapter but that's going to make the plug stick out further and I've got a ton of spare usb cables doing nothing. I'm not finding any info on doing it though.
you would spend more in solder and shrinkwrap than you would by just buying another USB cable
You mean just cut the cables and solder the wires back together? Yeah, probably. They're color coded. Messing with the wiring is probably going to make the cable more vulnerable to electromagnetic interference, but there's a good chance it'll still work for most things.

The cable is built in so I can't just replace it. I have some solder and wrap anyway.

Yeah it's only a little keyboard from an old tablet cover. Doesn't need much I would think.

Okay what the hell. The phone told me the image was half that res and the right way up.

Yes, no problem, just cut them and you will see, just stick the right colors together

Cool. opened up the scrap cut of a usb cable and found those wires surrounded by brass wire (which I assume is just for strengthening the cable?) I'll open up the keyboard one.

I'm not a regular and I did look around before asking. It's just one of those things that could seems obvious but could also be a very bad idea.

Bad news. found the four wires in the micro's cable but they're bare. I think the metal itself is colored but it's hard to make out in the light I have. Something for morning I guess.

>brass wire
That's EM shielding. If possible, connect it to the same kind of wire on the other side.

The micro cable doesn't have it. it's just a thin insulated tape with the 4 wires in a row inside.
The keyboard's cheap junk but I don't want to damage the tablet I hook it to.

There are adaptors for every type of connecter on eBay.
You don't need to destroy a good cable and risk the results of a wiring error.

It should be fine. Worst-case scenario, the keyboard doesn't work.
