How do I stop losing all of my self-confidence as a programmer whenever I read about some 17 year old prodigy finding a nifty exploit and getting thousands of dollars?
Meditate on the fact that there's always someone out there who's better than you. It's true for every skill or profession.
Accept it and move on.

Self improvement isn't about beating the other guy, it's about beating your self.

Why does it make you loose confidence? The media loves shovelling bullshit stories about prodigies. Remember that "dream in code" kid? All he did was make some android apps and here come the media saying he's fuckin genius. The point is to take this shit with a grain of salt, and not be discouraged over some bullshit that doesn't matter. Focus on your own work.
Find a nifty exploit yourself and quit complaining that others are more successful than you

Many people can find bugs by chance, few people can program and design a software correctly.
One is a byproduct of luck, the other is a byproduct of skill.
