I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu 16.10 - Installer glitches and never installs bootloader.
Debian - Installs but is incredibly glitchy. Can't dd without DE crashing.

No, see, he installed Arch from an infographic and everything he knows about it is from g. You install everything from the AUR. Linux kernel? Search the AUR. Coreutils? Get the ones from AUR. How do you install things from the AUR? You add a 3rd party repository and then get Yaourt from that and then just disregard your distribution's package manager and use a shitty abstraction.

I had been using Arch for a bit, but wanted to try out Debian.
So I tried a couple of different install methods on a different SSD on my X220. Sadly, it doesn't work as well as Arch for me.

Jessie, the stable branch, works nice and well. But it lacks easy power management and basically everything is outdated. Arch is currently on 4.8.4 and GNOME 3.22, Jessie is I believe on 3.16 and GNOME 3.14. I can respect that, as I would just like to install an OS and not have to worry about updates, or even have many updates per system start. I mostly use my laptop on the go, and do not really care much for a lot of updates when I go somewhere. It does mean you can't have "powertop --auto-tune" as a working systemd service because of outdated packages, and tlp is only available through backporting. I don't think there's an intel_pstate driver either.

So let's try testing/stretch. Using a netinstall and selecting the standard GNOME stuff in tasksel during install. Now I have a start job for NetworkManager waiting for 1 min and 30 seconds on every start up, and even after that it takes ages to load up. Quite the difference from Arch.

So a testing netinstall, and deselecting every single thing in tasksel. You boot up in a trusty shell after installation. You log in, su, "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get install gnome-shell nautilus gnome-terminal epiphany-browser". In other words: the absolute minimum to get it running and having a basic browser. Same networkmanager startup job, and still a slow slow boot.

I'm wondering if there's a way to resolve these issues, if I should really stick to Stable when going Debian, and if it's not just easier to use Arch since I never have any issues there.

Opinions?
>>

Install sid if you want rolling release.
Install stable if you want stable.
Really, what the hell is wrong with you?
if networkmanager is slow for you fix it or use something else.
Stop blaming distros for your problems, learn to fix them instead.
Also if you want a fast boot process why the hell do you use a display manager?

Sid is about as up to date and stable as arch.
Never needed to fix a bug even if it was my intention when installing sid a year ago.
You having problems with the alpha of the installer/stretch installer and network manager is not related to debian as a whole.

a long time ago that was the more accurate method

basically, the difference is this;
-ss before: seeks to the nearest earlier i-frame, then decodes each frame after until the time you specify (used to be that it only seeked to the i-frame and no further)
-ss after: decodes every frame from the beginning of the file up to the time you specify
