gentoo comes with a lot of default configuration in the stage3 tarball, and not having sane defaults for its fucking package manager is awful. rsync is slower, not using any encryption by default, and you get a warning that if you sync more than once a day you could be banned. why would they stick with this?

stage3 does not specify any mirrors. the manual is still about rsync, which is indeed problematic

Git does hashes to prevent random data errors, but the source could still be falsified.
