There are so many ways to read MS Office files on Linux and BSD. Google Docs, Office Online, Office running with Wine (Office 2003 was the last good Office and runs spectacularly on Wine, and there are plugins that let you import 2010 docx), Libre Office opens them. You can run a VM and a whole installation of Windows if you want.

Little reason exists to use Wine because simply USING Wine doesn't SUPPORT Wine. Run Windows in a VM for software you actually need, and remember the purpose of office software is to communicate with Microsoft Office unless you are a law office using WordPerfect.

Live a happy comfy life with your host and VMs of choice. It's effortless and unlike dual booting (which is only for desperately broken old junk or where your OS really needs direct hardware access) you can run multiple OS at once. Making more work for yourself is silly as fuck.

I like Linux, and tolerate Windows, but I don't need to choose. Neither does anyone else for personal use. Take the easy route and you will have maximum OS and application choice with zero sacrifice.

Unfortunately Microsoft has a huge lock-in they got by using anti-competitive practices, however you could just use either office 365 or MSO on wine. You're pointing to the wrong culprit and you're shooting yourself in the foot by actively supporting Microsoft's terrible business practices. If you care about your documents being yours forever save them on a well documented format like ODF. OOXML is supposed to be an standard but it's know this was done under fishy terms by Microsoft, the fact is that they don't use their own standard which is supposed to provide interoperability and instead they use a variant only they know how it works exactly. Think about that first.
