Have you checked out MyPaint or Krita? I hear Krita is the best painting program, free or nonfree, out there. Only runs on Linux though. MyPaint is pretty good too though.

Adobe software is just really hard to pirate. You can, but it might be a pain in the ass and I think you can fuck it up and get in trouble.
