Will Zcash mining be profitable for individual miners? I'm wondering if it's worth buying a hefty GPU tonight since its official genesis release is supposed to be tomorrow. And assuming China doesn't jump on it for a reasonably short period of time.
I haven't heard of it, so no it can't be profitable

Futures on it have already gone up to $250, but I'm not sure if the net hashrates will be worth going for, even for an ASIC-resistant coin.
Here's what I was referencing: https://blog.bitmex.com/trade-zcash-futures-on-bitmex/
I tried looking into it, and it looks like I have to install Ubuntu to mine these? aww fuck off, really?

I'm sure it'll be profitable for a few hours to days after its release before the dump. If you already have a decent GPU you might be able to make MAYBE $100. If you don't, you won't be profitable ever unless you buy a shitton of cards and that's a big gamble

The block reward ramps up over a month so probably not. I foresee a bunch of retarded instaminers switching to this thing anyway and pushing up the difficulty, so unless the coin has insanely high value (for an altcoin) very soon after release there'll probably be no return.
Also depends on whether you want to bet on a long term increase (mine and hold) or exchange immediately.

That's a good point; optimally I'd like to cash out <1y but after reading through local power costs and how much competition in dedicated GPU power I'd be competing against within a week of release; I'm gonna stay out. If I had a bit more to go to a local microcenter and buy a card outright, but facotring in shipping and the opportunity cost of 3 days worth of mining I don't think it'd be worth it.
