Programmers design things to suit their personal preferences and not the "preferences" regurgitated to them by expensive think-tanks and focus groups.

I like gnome3. None of the other DE's feel as comfy

Used to be ugly as fuck. Recently it became quite nice, but it's more bloated and slow than ever.

I like Cinnamon and Mate. I'm pretty new but the other de's I tried (kde and xfce) are awful and don't seem to work very well

I could give a shit about if it looks pretty, if I want le pretty I'll go buy a mac. I just want a DE that 'works on my machine'
