I have a X240 and Lenovo did indeed fuck up the trackpad in the 40 generation ThinkPads. It's massively improved in the 50 series, so time to upgrade.

you're tripping, son. The TrackPoint is way better than a trackpad. Not only is it more comfortable, but it means you don't have to take your hands off the keys to move the pointer. Once you get used to it, it's much more productive than a trackpad could ever be. The pads on ThinkPads have been bad in the past, but starting with the 50 generation they're much improved with smooth gliding and solid feeling click action. Not the greatest but definitely usable.

IMO, the perfect laptop has no trackpad at all. Instead it uses the space for a larger keyboard and speakers. Then you buy a separate trackpad to put on the left or right.
