Just upgraded a base iMac 5k with a 6700k, 1TB 850 EVO, and 32GB of ram.
Total spent $1440 (refurb iMac) + ~700 in upgrades.
Sold the stock i5, stock hdd, stock keyboard/mouse, stock ram for around 400.
Total spent: $1740 for a 5k screen, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, and 6700k. and I guess an r9 380 but I don't game.
AMA
How much did you spend?

dude what?
>>57249553
Can you read?
What parts did you use to upgrade it?
>>57249513
Nice.
Install gentoo or something now
>>57249553
>6700k
You can't overclock, why would you spend the extra dosh instead of the 6700?
>>57249609
clock speed is inherently faster on the k version. 3.4 vs 4
also I got a good price.
>6700k
enjoy thermal throttling
>>57249513
Good luck trying to cool an already overheating maching putting a 91w cpu in place of a 65w one.
>>57249663
runs idle at around 32 degrees C.
Underload never peaked past 46.
>>57249646
2014 had those issues.

So what do you plan to to with it?
>think about picking up an iMac
>the refurbs are all 16:9
When did Apple leave the masterrace?
>>57249748
I really have no reason to lie. But apples thermal compound is absolute dogshit. Changing that makes a big difference. Temps never got anywhere near that high however.
>>57249767
Mostly rendering and programming. It's my new pc seeing as my 3570k build wasn't doing to good and I can't stand windows 10
>>57249792
After there 20 and 24 inch models. They went to 1080 and 1440p
>>57249700
>never peaked past 46 degrees
Anon, I told you to stop lying. No more 4chan for you today.
>>57249875
That's disappoining
They should make a Mac tower with no built in screen (Like they have done previously)
>>57249973
It's called the Mac Pro
>>57249942
Ehh 1440p is pretty based
>>57250043
2560x1600 is better
>>57249925
>i don't like what I'm hearing so it must be false
>>57250043
that is pleb resolution
2560x1600 is better
>>57249513
How the fuck did you take it apart?

>>57251589
You cut the adhesive between the glass LCD display and the body with something like a guitar pick. You'll need to put new adhesive strips down to put it back.
>>57249513
I have a non-Retina 27" iMac, so this is relevant to my interests.
Is there a good guide for exactly how to do the upgrade? Aside from the iFixit teardown, I mean.
>>57251628
I used the Ifixit guide. Honestly it's all you need as they have multiple photos per step.
>>57251589
The glass panel is attached with adhesive, I shit you not.
>>57251703
>>57251612
>>57251628
>>57251669
That seems like a shitty way to make it.
>>57251752
It is. The older models had the glass held on by magnets, you just needed a suction cup or even a strip of tape to remove the glass
>>57249513
Not bad.
>>57251703
>>57251752
>>57251765
It's bad for repair purposes, but, for what it's worth, that adhesive serves the purpose of getting the display panel closer to the glass, which reduces glare.
>>57249513
Congrats I guess?
I recently upgraded my Z400.
Z400 - Free
E5645 - Free
550ti - Free
48Gb RAM - $270
>>57251412
No the thing is i have an I7-4790k running @1.125v(with full 4,4 turbo) and i get around 55 degrees.
>inb4 aio watercooling meme
>>57249700
There is no way you are getting 46 degrees under load. My noctua only gets those temperatures at 100% fan speed.
>gaymur parts for a non-gayming OS
>>57253618
Anon, could you redpill me? I'm really wondering what purpose that 48Gb of ram would have. I'm doing a lot of GFX, modeling, sound edit, coding, and never needed more than 12Gb.
>>57253936
You dumb fucking nigger, he literally upgraded everything expect the GPU
>>57253959
>gaymur parts in a non-gayming computer running a non-gayming OS
if you do rendering you use xeons or amd chips not i7s
>>57249513
>1TB 850 EVO
>Buying TLC garbage
Moron.
>>57253963
Just because you're not rendering, doesn't mean you're a gamer.
>>57253963
He can't put xeons in that socket you retard. Are you saying he can't render with an i7?
>>57253963
That i7 is more than fine. A Xeon that could outperform it not only doesn't fit in his socket but would cost much more.
>>57254031
>>57254010
if he's a professional then he would be using a xeon.
if he's not a professional then he's putting gaymur parts in a computer that doesn't play games.
reading isn't your strong suit, champ.
>>57254048
Thanks for letting us know that i7, RAM, and SSD are all gamer parts. I will no longer be buying these since I'm not a gamer. I will only use i5s and hard drives from now on.
>>57249513
So you fell for the mac meme OP?
>>57254110
>SSD
not a gaymur part
>overclocked DDR3 RAM

>i7 6700k
gaymur parts
>r9 380
gaymur parts
>>57254123
Sorry for overclocking. I didn't realize you had to be a gamer to overclock. Also, sorry for the high end CPU, only gamers need fast CPUs. Also, sorry for not throwing away the GPU that was included. I will tear it out as soon as I get home.
>>57254185
that CPU isn't really high end
>>57254185
So OP, what programs will you use on your newly upgraded monster machine?
>>57254185
>I didn't realize you had to be a gamer to overclock
kek you're not going to overclock in that shitbox chassis. if anything you're gonna throttle.
>high end CPU
kek
>Also, sorry for not throwing away the GPU that was included
again, why did you put gaymur parts in a non-gayming machine running a non-gayming OS?
And yet you still can't play video games.
>>57254219
I will shitpost at maximum efficiency.
>>57254230
I never wanted to play them in the first place. I would have built a gaming PC with the money if I did.
>>57254285
>gaymur parts in a PC with no games
>>57254296
think of the mad pussy he'll slay, dont be so narrow minded
>>57254285
It just seems like a lot of money for what you're getting. Kind of like buying a plain white Gucci T-shirt for $120 that looks exactly like the Fruit of the Loom ones.
