My CPU temps have been getting hot lately so I decided I should try and see about replacing the thermal paste.

This is what my CPU looks like right now, can I remove the thermal paste with just some rubbing alcohol? How much pressure do I apply when using the paper towel?
>>
close to 0.
>>
>>57243954
Close to zero pressure?
>>
>>57243966
you just have to be really careful as to not get anything wet with the alcohol but the top of the chip where the paste is.Dont let it get on the mobo
>>
>>57243966
Well I hope you have your measuring equipment calibrated because you're not going to want to exceed 8.944 hectopascals of pressure.

what the fuck are you asking?
>>
>And you need to add more paste than what is currently on the chip the whole thing is not even covered
>>
>>57243976
Appreciate it.
>>57243980
Trying to make sure I'm not going to smash the pins

This isn't your presonal tech support. Go back to neogaf.
>>
>>57244002
Haha, will do.
>>
>>57243999
The Pins are safe in the socket held down by the cpu itself
>>
>>57243999
okay well you want to press hard but not too hard but you know hard enough but like too hard would be bad

how the fuck are we supposed to help?
>>
>>57244011
By being more like the poster above you?
>>
Its not the alcohol thats dangerous. That will vapor away quickly. But be careful not to get the compound on it. It might be conductive. The amount of compound looks good, it should cover the die beneath the heatspreader.
>>
>>57244025
Thought we agreed you'd fuck off? How is this even a question? You take paper towels, you wipe it off. There's isn't even any pressure needed for it - it's not fucking concrete on there. After that soak some alcohol in a paper towel, not too much, no that's too much idiot, and polish it.
>>
>>57244058
Got it. Thanks!
>>
>>57243930
whatever you do make sure you are wearing socks and clean/repaste/re-seat the heatsink while standing on carpet, you don't want to cause static shock
>>
>>57244106
Of course, I'll install Gentoo as well.

like... enough pressure to squish through a banana with no skin, would be a safe maximum. and make sure its nice and dry before you add the new paste.

Are you using your standard cooling fan? What sort of case do you have? As in does it flow well?

>>
>>57244178
well i figured I dont have a pressure gauge and I doubt many people do. Whats something weve all done, that is globally understood. squishing banana with finger
>>
>>57244041
it's too much actually, there should only be a very thin layer, just enough to fill out any small gaps in the microstructure of the metals, the less air and the more direct metal contact you have the better the heat flow

the best way to apply paste is to just put a drop in the center of the cpu and letting the heatsink do the rest of the work, the edges don't matter since they don't get that hot
>>
You're supposed to replace the thermal paste at least twice a year you fucking retard.
>>
>>57244352
but why? just replace when the temps get weird, much more practical.
>>
i used my finger to clean that shit, then when its almost all gone, you can use like toilet paper or some shit, it will be 100% clean and you cant spill it on mobo
>>
Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Go slow. It's not hard.
>>
>>57244390
I'd even recommend taking the cpu out of the socket.
>>
>he doesn't spread his thermal paste evenly

I enjoy good temps. I idle between 25-28 degrees.

Spread it evenly you plebs.
>>
>>57244403
I blob and I idle at 10 degrees
>>
Not OP, but if I poured some paste in the middle, then pressed heatsink and slowly moved it around to spread it evenly and now there are 10C difference between cores 0-1 and 2-3 under heavy load - does it mean that I did it wrong as well?
>>
>>57244403
I blob and get that at quarter load, plus I live in Australia plus I have all AMD.
>>
>>57244720
Don't move it around. The heatsink will spread it out by itself. Also you might have too much paste.
>>
>>57243976
Don't listen to this nigger. I used Listerine to wipe off teh cum spilt them all over the chips and it still works. Ants are th e nly problem.
>>
>>57243930
I wouldn't use a paper towel because of the risk of little pieces getting into places that you don't want them to. I personally use a coffee filter to get thermal paste off. You don't need to apply too much pressure, just a gentle rub. When you're doing it you'll be able to tell how much pressure you should be putting on it.
>>
>>57244821

It was just a dot like in >>57244232 pic.

And yet, under heavy load, my i7-6700k reach 85C on core 0 and 1, while having max 75C on cores 3 and 4.

I love how some people are advising him to spread it across the IHS. That's not how heat transfer works as 99.9% of it is coming from the middle. small pea sized dot in the middle is fine. let the heatsink spread it.
>>
>>57245071
What is your vcore when stress testing?
>>
>>57245124

Im actually very green in that, so I just ran some of the most demanding software I had.

I left everything at default - voltage is 1,3V, while frequency is left at stock 4,0Ghz.

I know that there is an option in RealTemp about "testing sensors" which involve some sort of stress test, but Im afraid of using it.
>>
>>57245168
What cooler are you using? As for stress testing what software are you using? If you're just doing normal stuff such as gaming, rendering videos you shouldn't come anywhere close to 85c. When gaming I hit 40-50c but id I run AIDA64 I'll get 70c across all cores.
>>
>>57245252

Local flavor of 212 Evo - www.silentiumpc.com/en/fera-3-he1224/ because I couldnt really find Coolermaster or Cryorig coolers in shops in my country, except for most expensive ones.

I was using RealTemp (www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) for monitoring temperature.

Forgive me, this is the first time I use other cooler than stock ones and such expensive and powerful CPU.

As long as there's enough thermal paste, it doesn't matter how you apply it.
>>
>>57243930
i dont even use alcohol. literally some sightly wetted kitchen roll. just dont get anything wet. i use as much pressure as i need to get it off. its kinda thick. i find rubbing in circles gets it off pretty well. just dont be an idiot with it. they are fragile but not that fragile
>>
>>57245315

>because I couldnt really find Coolermaster or Cryorig coolers in shops in my country, except for most expensive ones.

I know cryorig only recently started having mass available cooler, but still.
I did grab an m9i about 1 month ago for 20 something €, pretty impressed with it. Keeps a non-k 4790 at 55c on load

>>57246270
Oh, so you knew about it all along. Got it. Good for you, man. Best keep recommending that garbage to others then.
>>
>>57246317

No, Im the guy that got it recommended to, not the one recommending it.

Its just that when I hear malware and then links shows people saying "I installed it and now got some shit", I assume that installer is the source of problems (not to mention that many sites with software itentionally add their own installers that try to smuggle a lot of crap), not the program itself.

Why installing it, tho, if standalone version exist?
>>
>>57246395
If a program's homepage itself has an installer secretly placing adware or any other PUP on your system after opting out from all additional offerings, at that point it doesn't matter to me anymore if there's a protable version as well.
>>
>>57245315

By the way, if I would want to add second fan, what CFM values should I aim at?
>>
>>57243930
>Don't use paper towel. They scratch
>Use qtips(cotton swabs) with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol.
>Let the alcohol soak and break down the paste. 7-10 minutes
>Roll the swabs as you wipe till clean
>After you wipe all the alcohol/old paste up with dry swabs
>Dip the next swabs in alcohol for clean up

Why wouldn't he just take the processor out of the motherboard and clean it then?

Not him, but I got told to reapply paste, but Im too afraid to touch my CPU. I had to put my monthly income into it, if I screw something up, Im in big, smelly hole.

I don't see what could go wrong, unless if you'd try to pry it out of its socket or bend the pins just for the hell of it.

The same guy from >>57244720 - this was taken when minimized after playing some games - are you sure this is about thermal paste problem and not something else?

Also, should temperature be around the same on all cores or the most used core will have higher temperature?
