I bought this lousy Alienware tower for peanuts from an friend selling all his old shit.

This will be a perfect starter PC for my nephew but honestly after wiping it and benchmarking it, it's pathetic.

I don't really want to invest much into it otherwise I'd have made him a new build, it really just needs a new card as it has two shitty Radeon HD 5670s in it - one of which is dead kek.

I've never touched Alienware and I don't think anyone with any self respect would, but it was so ridiculously cheap I couldn't pass it up as Christmas gift.

Anyway I'm thinking of putting a 1050ti in there as they are releasing pretty cheap too. What I'm wondering though is will this be possible in this tower? I know Alienware/Dell makes things difficult with 'proprietary' upgrades for their Alienware shit.

Will it be possible to just throw a 1050ti in there and wrap it up?

Sell it and spend the money on porn subscriptions.

Let the little faggot find his own PC like the rest of us did. It will build character.

I'm really unoriginal when it comes to Christmas gifts. This was my first attempt at a more mature gift than random junk.

He's only just turned thirteen and I thought it would expand his potential to play something a little more creative and intelligent. He likes playing LAN strategy games when he visits but otherwise he hasn't got access to anything like that at his home.

I agree with your sentiment though, unfortunately my sister is a bit of an enabler and his dad doesn't really give a fuck. He has no one else to introduce him to computer culture, hopefully I can show him how to build his own rig in the future.

Judging from your pic it's the Aurora R4? You need to give us more information if you are looking for advice.

OP the PC should have standard PCIe 6/8 pin power connectors you can jack into the new card. If the old system was running x2 5670s the cables should already be there.

Chances are the motherboard is old enough it's using PCIe Gen 2. A Gen 3 1050ti will work fine but there's a possibility the CPU, the pcie interface itself, or another system component could bottleneck the card.

Still if you can get decentish performance out of it compared to the extra money you're spending go for it. I bought a 7970 back when I had an old Core2Quad rig and used the same card when I upgraded to an 1155 i7 a few years ago.

My mistake, he said it was the Aurora. I'm guessing it's actually either the R2 or R3 due to the 5670s in it.

This is a really weird rig because it still has it's original files on it that note it's information, which apparently says it has a 560ti in it.

Regardless of all that, I can't get my head around it.

When I pick and choose everything that goes into a custom build yeah it makes sense, but I can't figure out if a 1050ti will actually go in this and work.

Hey /g/ will a pci express video card work in a pci express slot?

OP here's a checklist to see if you can fit that GPU in there regardless of bottlenecks or interface limitations.

>Power
You're gonna need 6/8 pin PCIe power connectors from the power supply depending on what the card needs. If the original build was indeed setup for crossfire the PSU should be more than capable of powering it and the cables should be attached to the PSU and router near the PCIe slots.

>Physical Dimensions
You're retailer or the manufactures site should have detailed dimensions on the card so you can make sure it will physically fit inside the case. Get out a ruler or measuring tape and see how much clearance you have for card length and height.

That's pretty much it.

Think about that for a second.

Thanks for reply, I was assuming that there would be bottlenecks which isn't a major issue. Considering what I bought it for and how cheap the 1050ti is, as long as it functions is my only concern. Otherwise this thing isn't even worth the scrap in components.

>>57236500
Well I'll have to check those dubs, but probably.
>>
>>57236511
What you can do is buy the card from a retailer you know has a decent return policy, then benchmark the system and compare the results to benchs performed on modern systems using the same card. While a lot of game engines are CPU dependent, those that rely more on the GPU will give you a good comparison.

What you want to avoid is spending upwards of $200 or so for a small performance gain. Obviously that money can go a lot further if you're planning on upgrading to a modern system and reusing the card but your mileage will vary.

Great advice, thanks again Anons.

This is basically what I was looking to hear, I'll go through with it and see what's what then.
