What is the best graphing calculator for a STEM student? I'm thinking about a HP50g, but i wanted to hear /g/'s opinion on the subject.

nspire. Accept no substitutes.
>>
The one they allow you to use in tests
>>
I have the HP50g and there's a learning curve. Also, it uses polish notation so get ready for that too.

It's a fantastic calculator btw.
>>
>>57235910
From what i've seen so far there are few to no restrictions regarding what calculator students are allowed to use.

>>57235945
I used my friend's HP50g for a test. If i knew how to solve linear systems fast enough with it i could save a lot of time. What do you mean by polish notation?
>>
you don't need a calculator
>>
>>57235895
Actually I had an inspire and it really sucks, especially if you want to program it. I suggest ti84+CE
>>
>>57236154
Say you want to write the function (x+2)/(x-5) you'd input like.

x 2 + x 5 - /
>>
>>57235870
>using graphing calculators.

all i need is my 115-es
>>
>>57237026
thats reverse polish notation
>>
>>57237102
Yes, that's what the 50g uses, it's programming language is even called Reverse Polish Lisp.
>>
>>57235870
EE senior here. I used that casio calculator all through college, but then I switched to an HP 50g at the beginning of the year. RPN saves a shit ton of time, but I dont use the HP on tests since I still dont know how to do everything on it.
>>
My ti84 plus is good but the screen resolution is too low, it's hard to make out what some graphs are doing without zooming in a bunch.
>>
Is there a low price model that has "Equation mode" like HP50g does? I mean, so i don't have to write everything in parentheses and i can easily edit/correct the numbers while calculating. Like a easier and more dynamic way to do the math
>>
>>57237679
The Casio FX-115ES isn't a graphing calculator but it's equation editor is very intuitive. It's $15 full price but sometimes you can find it for $10.
>>
In highschool I was required to get a TI-83. I still use it to this day as my go-to real-world calculator... but for anything complicated, I use my computer. Python, including matplotlib if necessary, work wonders.
>>
>>57237679
>>57237679

Casino 991ex is even danker, better screen, better processor, worse keys, spreadsheets/statistics etc all n all p nice
>>
>>57235870
If you had to do some calculations or presentation or whatever actual work, it'd be a decent CAS science scrapbook thing where you can *program* your data calculations in a useful, modern language.

But what you'll actually be doing for the most part is fucking dumb memorization and preparations to pass tests quickly.

If you are allowed to use programmable calculators use the ones the majority of programming students in your uni use.
If not, fuck it, get that damn Casio. It's a shitti*er* tool than a fancy HP or TI, but they're all trash anyway and so is the stuff they're gonna test you on.
>>
>>57235870
I'd recommand the TI-83, I used one in high school and you can make very useful programs with it
>>
>>57235870
Python with the scipy stack
>>
>>57240685
I'd go with Jupyter, Beaker, Zeppelin, Sage or something.

Or R with the typical IDE / Mathematica / Matlab / Maple if you like the approach where you use shit languages / shit language bindings with established tools.

But SciPy on a text editor or something also works.
>>
>>57235870
I am currently in the same situation, since I misplaced my trusty scientific calculator, I was thinking of upgrading to either the one in your pic (which you can flash a different firmware on to unlock more features meant for the $80 one in the same series) or an HP 50g.

The problem is that they are both in the same price range, and I can not decide which one would be better for me.

I guess I could just get a fancier scientific calculator like the casio 991ex, but I want a programmable calculator to be honest.

>>57235945
Isn't it in algebraic mode out of the box?

A computer with mathematica and matlab. You have to be delusional if you think these overpriced pieces of plastic are useful for anything other than taking the fucking SAT.
>>
>>57235910
So none?
>>
Guys how do I learn math?
>>
>>57242184
start with the greeks
>>
>>57235870
If you want to go with the crowd, TI.
If you're some assburger RPN freak, HP.
>>
senior mechanical engineering student there. get used to a ti 36x pro, it's the most powerful calculator you can use the on FE exam here in the US if that's important to you. otherwise i'd recommend an nspire cas. the amount of shit it can do out of the box is already impressive, but people write lots of stuff to make life even easier. it's really easy to be enticed by it's ability to allow you to cheat but i recommend avoiding it. also, people sometimes use these things as crutches which hurts them in the end.

Graphing: Ti-89 Titanium > Ti nSpire CX CAS
Scientific: Ti 36x Pro = Casio FX-991EX
You'll need both a graphing and scientific calc, but probably using the scientific one more often, since graphing calculators are usually banned from exams.

36x Pro has a more convenient layout and better buttons, but the 991EX has a better processor, is accurate to further decimal places, better screen, and can input much longer equations than the 36x Pro.
Find the 36x Pro is better for high school up to sophomore level in college, but the Casio 991EX definitely has the upper hand for STEM students sophomore level and above, especially once you get used to the layout.

>>57236297
Depends. My physics classes rarely used numbers - it only became more symbolic the higher level you got.
Other professors still loved number crunching, and calculating them by hand wasn't possible in the given timeframe.

/sci/ sticky.

How's high school?
>>
>>57242587
Also, note the last 3 decimal places in both calculators.
The 36x Pro tends to have more rounding and estimation errors, which is probably due to the more limited CPU it has on board, so it takes shortcuts.

>>57242600
>Can't tell the difference between a recommendation and a request.
How's your reading comprehension?
>>
>>57242184
Spend time reading and using it. A lot of time. Pain in the arse, but that's how you learn it to an useful extent. (There is too much to learn it all. It IS ultimately trying to describe how the universe works precisely, after all.)

Mostly you also want to be able to program in a bigger piece of maths software if you're going to actually solve real world problems with efficiency and style and a sane workflow.
>>
>>57235870
For fuck's sake, just buy some cheap calculator that can do all basic operations you need for ten bucks or so. You will use it five times a year in some of your exams, that's it. Plotting a function won't help you at all anyway. The only people I know who seriously think that these overpriced pieces of shit are any help were fucking losers.
