Just a little OT...
At several displays of watches for sale (jewellers, pop-up mall shops, etc) I've noticed that digital watches are in a very small minority.
Used to be a mechanical watch was just about forgotten, now they're everywhere. Digital watches pretty much look unfashionable.

I'm thinking of buying my first real watch, been using f-91w with nato for few years (I'm 23 y-o). I really like the look of the Seiko SNK809, but how long does that go for if I don't service it ? How good does it keep time and does that change over time? Is it easy to regulate myself? I'm a practical man, so I know I should just go for a quartz or solar one, but I just really like the way it looks at least for the price.
What you think /wt/?

a mechanical watch might not be the best idea for you if you don't want to keep up with it, it will go 5+ years with no service but if you leave it sitting for 2 days it will die

also every month that does not have 31 days will cause the watch to show you the wrong date on the first of the month and you will have to keep up with resetting it

if you don't want to deal with that get a digital quartz
>>
>>57235832
>-7m in 20 years
Sounds bretty gud.
>>
>>57237979
I used to wear watch in bed too, so that's not so bad. I hear stories about watches going for tens of years without service, but I guess those are some higher quality ones, or just luck?

Yea I thought it would be like that with the date, but that's not so bad.

The accuracy still worries me, but I can regulate it pretty well? I mean I don't need to know exact time for the second, but if they start to lose multiple minutes its going to bother a little.

Maybe I should just go for some eco-drive? Too bad for the looks, I like how the numbers on the Seiko blend in nicely, I hate the big blunt numbers I see on most watches this price.

>>
>>57238195

it's going to be accurate enough, you are going to have other clocks to set it by, right?

it should not lose or gain a min a month and you are going to have to reset and fuck with it that often anyway

i said 5 years because that's what you could count on, it very well could go 10 years or more without service, but it's such a cheap watch it's better to buy another than to pay for a $50 service
>>
>>57238227

Nice. I love the aging on those.
>>
>>57238260
fuck with how other than the date?

thanks for the answers btw.
>>
>>57238195
Watches can go for decades without service, but you'd be doing irreparable damage to them. For a cheap watch like the Seiko it's no big deal, but it would be expected that the accuracy would slowly drift. Sometimes the cheaper watches actually handle abuse better because of the looser manufacturing tolerances. Accuracy is likely initially a small fraction of a minute a day, so it will only become more than a few minutes off after a few weeks or more. You can adjust it yourself using an app and tool to open the watch, your milage will vary. A quartz like a Timex field watch would be more durable to slams and more accurate regardless if you don't care about mechanical. Solar/Kinectic/Eco-drive if you don't want to deal with batteries either.

He's referring to the bi-monthly 31-day fix you'll need to perform you'll have to reset the time anyways.
>>
>>57238363

well 7 months out of the year you are going to have to fuck with the date, then there is daylight savings time 2x per year so that's 9 times or once every month and a half on average

and every time you don't wear it for 24-48 hours you have to reset it. that is going to happen at least a few times per year

that should be it, it's not going to get several mins off time in a month or two
>>
>>57238416

he should consider this or something like it

There's just not enough you can do with a digital to justify anything expensive enough to be sold in an actual watch store or jeweler. Digital watches used to be cool because anything digital was new and exciting, and pretty much everybody wore a watch because cell phones with clocks weren't a thing yet.

Nowadays the only markets for digitals are people who don't care about watches but need one (EMTs, cops, military), and they usually buy some Target Casio or whatever, or people who need a specialist watch for climbing, skiing, diving, or whatever, and a normal watch shop can't sell enough of those to bother stocking them.

Even digital accuracy and extra features aren't an issue anymore, since you can get something like my Citizen Skyhawk A-T, which actually IS a digital watch but displays its time like an analog. (I don't think most people realize this but these aren't quartz watches, the timekeeping is exactly like a digital and it uses a stepper motor to drive the hands.)
>>
>>57239456
How do we appear to you? Do we sound like pathetic manchildren or are we ok?
>>
>>57240652

i think he's gone :(
>>
>>57240505
>I don't think most people realize this but these aren't quartz watches, the timekeeping is exactly like a digital and it uses a stepper motor to drive the hands
A quartz watch refers to movements that are regulated by a quartz crystal, independently of how the hands are driven (or the display in case of watches with digital dials)
Also, most watches using quartz movements have always used stepping motors, in fact the Beta 21 movement used a stepping motor
>All that was left was to convert the pulses appearing at the end of the divider chain into step by step advancements of the second hand. Jean Hermann and François Niklès proposed in 1967 a simple solution of such a stepping motor for Beta 1 as seen in the picture. The setup incorporated an anchor wheel and an anchor which were responsible for the go and stop of the second hand. Much different as in mechanical watches, where the anchor and the anchor wheel act as escapement, here the anchor drives the anchor wheel by wiggling forth and back. The anchor was activated by means of a bobbin coil, which was attached to the anchor and which was magnetized by bipolar electric pulses. The duration and the amplitude of the pulses had to be well controlled to warrant proper operation and to save battery power. The duration of the pulses were derived from the pulse pattern appearing along the divider chain using boolean logic. The concept and the basics had been worked out as early as 1966.

RIP in peace
>>
>>57240742
Yeah, I realized after writing that I wasn't clear on that. Digitals technically have a crystal in them, and "quartz watches" have a stepping motor, but the way it's applied is different.

It's technically quartz, but in common usage "quartz watch" refers to a watch in which a relatively traditional gear train is electrically driven and is regulated by a quartz crystal. With the Skyhawk the hands aren't running on a normal geared movement, they're individually motor controlled and don't have what we'd think of a watch movement at all. The crown isn't linked to the hands and you set time on the LCD, and then the hands jump into position when you "lock in" the time. They move independently of each other too, like when you switch time zones only the hour hand moves.

It's pretty trick overall, which is why I like this watch so much. It's a big, busy, ugly thing, but I can't help but appreciate just how much tech they've crammed into such a tiny space, you've got like 7 motors and/or solenoids, two LCDs, an atomic time receiver, etc.
>>
>>57241331
>Digitals technically have a crystal in them
Digitals are watches with a digital display, crystal or no.

Actually yeah. My grandma has this fairly nice old clock that doesn't run. I remember from when I played with it as a kid that if you gave the pendulum a nudge that it would start ticking for a while before it ground to a halt. Does the wt recommend this watch?

If not, do you recommend a similarly looking one? Automatic is not important, day/date is.

I've been looking for one exactly like this for a reasonable price. Honestly it doesn't matter to me that it's not a quartz watch. If there's a cheaper one that looks exactly (or mostly) like this I'd take it.

Also: Is it true I have to set the date again for every month that doesn't have 31 days? Should/Can I wear it while sleeping?

Sup guys, looking into getting pic related, just wondering how those strap adapters are? Since, well I don't particularily enjoy using plastic straps on watches and I'd rather use good quality Zulu or Nato with that. Also, will inverted screen make it harder to read if not under direct sunlight?
>>
>>57245757
You don't need any kind of strap adapter for a zulu or nato, they slide under the springbars you'd only need one for a watch with weird nonstandard lugs.
>>
>>57245780
Forgot my period after springbars. Also regarding inverted LCDs they look really fantastic in the sun but yes they are much harder to read in other lighting conditions.
>>
>>57245757
Resin straps aren't bad at all, and nowhere near as bad as a leather/nato strap user might expect.

and by putting a nato you loose one huge advantage of a casio manchild-shock.

Being able to rinse it under running water, wipe with your shirt/towel and put it back on your wrist completely dry.

I work in EMT/EMS and shit's crucial to me.

DESU though I often can't really differentiate between women's and men's watches and sometimes the differentiation seems silly.

What I like about this one is it is minimalist yet "elegant"(?). It is not completely without adornment but not in your face. And I think white dials just look better.

Dude... This is beyond vulgar/childish...
>>
>>57245846
Well, I don't think that kind of an ability is exactly priority number one to me. So far I've had some other Casio models with resin band and frankly I prefer nylon straps over resin(or metal bracelets) when it gets cold, but I'll guess I'll see when I get the thing. It's not like I can't swap and compare if the straps on G-Shocks are better.

>>57245780
Well, in DW5600's case, the lug width is about 16 millimetres, and that might be rather imbalanced looking on the size of the watch itself. Not to mention finding good straps in that size can be a chore(especially when I have some extra straps in 18 to 22 millimetres in a drawer next to me). I'd also rather not file the lugs down and drill new holes or do modifications like that if there's easier way to achieve the same goal. Also thanks for your input about the screens.
>>
>>57246263
You can always cut some notches in a wider strap to make it fit better, that seems to be a common solution.

It's actually pretty amazing how long devices last when you cut all the fancy gimmicky bullshit features away. My road bike which is just as old as I am (25) came with an old tacho. It's always on, it displays the current speed, how much I rode, max speed and pedalling speed. The battery on this thing is at least eight years old, but I assume it's much older. It's fucking amazing. I wish you could still buy devices like that. It just blows my mind at what insane cost all those useless features they put into all kinds of devices come. Really feels like people forgot how to build proper electronics.

It's not unsustainable, people are just not willing to pay the price. It used to be that if you wanted a washing machine, it would cost the equivalent of two months' wages for the average family, but the damn thing would last a lifetime, ie 30-40 years. Now you can get one for a week's wages but it will only last 5-10 years. People don't care that it's unreliable shit. They just walk into Home Depot and pick up whatever has the highest shiny-to-price ratio.

If anything, this rampant consumerism is unsustainable. The planet just does not have the resources to continue producing garbage that falls apart.

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

What is the worst watch related incident you guys have ever had? Could be anything from losing it to fucking up a service or buying a fake unintentionally.

For me it was this past summer when I lost my Speedmaster 145.022 during a sailing accident when I was thrown from the boat. I can only assume that the spring bar broke or something along those lines when I hit the water. Yeah maybe you should learn how to save pics instead rather than taking screenshot. What filter is it out of curiosity, doesn't look like flux?

Also no, no NATO on it. Why? Because Casio makes watches with 16mm lug width, and the smallest NATOs generally start at 18mm.

Now you can use one of the many adapters, little plastic parts attached to your watch with wider rings so you can pass a NATO through, but they look fucking garbage, at least I haven't found any that didn't look like someone cut the original band a pierced a hole in it.

Or you can cut extra plastic and make the lugs longer, but the result is much weaker lugs because it severely weakens the plastic.

Or you can use something like pic related. It's not really a NATO, but the part holding the lugs can be smaller than the band, which really suits well Casios. There are very few of questionable quality, but you can have it custom made for not too much.

Or you can wait until Casio finally makes steel cased digitals with wide lugs.

That's the funny thing about NATO straps, they're just nylon, so it's not expensive to produce no matter the quality, and the difference between equally priced straps can be HUGE, and the quality can more than double for $1 more.

Spending $12.50 on such shitty NATO straps when you can have much better ones for $10 is indeed outrageous.

I partially agree with you.

As a person who lives in a very humid and hot country, and serves in a place that is higher than the national average on humidity i obviously sweat quite a bit while working in the sun and have to constantly wash&clean my hands from grime, dirt, grease, oil and a shitload of dust before working on electronics and after working on anything mechanical that requires grease/oil.

And yes, cheap natos really carry a god damn scent and are terrible to wear in the long run. However good to great nato/zulu straps and perlon straps often to do not, and even if they do are rather easy to wash off. I've used a few 2$ natos, that despite being rather comfy for the price, reeked after a month (seams also started fucking about). While the really good zulu strap and Eulit palma on my Monster haven't after 3 months of work.

Received my new old stock orient today. The quality of these older afforable japanese quartz watches are amazing.
It supposedly has the orient 54910 quartz movement with two jewels. I was not able to open the caseback however.

The movement really looks similar to the 7C39 in some aspects, but i think it's an in-house solution from Orient.

Though you lack the proper Seiko quartz penis, instead you get a tiny Asian tri-cock icon.

Your tiny trio can't stand before the mighty Quartzcock.

I'm really digging the lugs and the finishing looks alright. Would fit nicely on quite a few types of straps since the bracelet looks meh tier and doesn't blend with the polished finishing.

Why do they think that shitty painted plastic looks ok? If pulsar can make a steel watch for the same price roughly why is casio so fucking cheap?

is there a new equivalent to a king quartz, any sort of high-end quartz watch? or would I just have to buy a used one online?

also, have any of you bought off of a seller from japan on ebay before? ever have problems with the item not arriving, or getting "lost" by customs?

would any of you purchase a used watch, or do you feel that it is something a bit too personal?

my wrist is too small for watches haha. I wish I could have one

Buy vintage then. 34mm (give or take) diameter is not uncommon for them.

I want to buy my first real watch, besides the F91W

Quartz is what I'm seeking, as I don't wish to have to service it, changing a battery is simple and I've done it before

what is a nice quartz watch, not looking for anything too complicated on the dial. Just solid line markers, no roman or arabic numerals.

Budget is $250, please respond. Am I limited to orient and bulova for what I'm looking for? It seems all the current seiko quartz watches are ridiculously fucking gaudy
>>
>>57245560
Don't worry about the date thing, Seiko 5's run on +-40s per day so you will get used to setting it all the time anyway.

You shouldn't wear a watch while sleeping.
>>
>>57272066
>as I don't wish to have to service it
Any watch you want to keep for the long term is going to require service, quartz or mechanical.
>>
>>57272217
>You shouldn't wear a watch while sleeping.
Of course not, it could be damaged while you flail about wildly the whole night. What the fuck are you talking about? There's no problem with wearing a watch to bed; you're fucking sleeping, what's going to happen to it?

I'm aware, but you would agree the concerns for a quartz watch are going to be less than those of a mech, right?

I've been lurking these threads for a while now too, and I think I saw you mention once that you wish more people would buy quartz anyways

Do you have any recommendations Mr. nineball? I just want something simple and nice.

I don't think that happened.

But either way with mech or quartz, a 250 dollar watch is something most people will probably never service due to the cost of service compared to the cost of the watch. Both should be able to last a few decades (the mech with nothing, the quartz with just battery changes.)
