Because it takes out all the guesswork about what bitrate to use.. You are guaranteed shit quality at CRF 63 or best quality at CRF 4. Doesn't get any more straightforward than that. Finally a single pass CRF encode will result in the same quality as a 2-pass encode at similar file size (assuming -qmin/-qmax are not modified on both encodes).

Here's an example if you need further proof why 2-pass is a huge fucking meme.

2.77MB Webm related used the following parameter:

-crf 50 -qmin 40 -b:v 0 -quality good

It would take you like an hour of testing different bitrates and shit to reach close to 2.77MB and similar quality.

All I had to do was set the CRF and a -qmin, no guessing bitrates whatsoever.

That's a 60FPS video clip btw.
