HDDs haven't gone down as much as I'd like, but high capacity SSDs are getting cheaper quickly and you can buy 128 GB microsd cards for like $20 now.

Also, """the cloud""", that's why. Your normie consumer doesn't need massive drive space since so much stuff is hosted through google drive, dropbox, etc.

Tbh I don't see single drive capacity as much of an issue at the moment, but transfer speeds can't really keep up when you need to shift terabytes of data between all your fuck huge drives. 3.1 isn't widespread enough yet to make a difference.

I even got 65 gigs for free, because corporations offer it bundled with phones, special sign-ups, surveys etc. that said, they often go on sale.

Also, can't recommend buying those 1tb externals from Seagate; bought 4 of them about 2 months ago, and now they have failed 3 times in a row: 1 per day. Wtf?

Wow. Share some of that luck. Can't wait until ssd's get cheaper. One of the main reasons I bought an ssd was for stability; cba having my os approximately reinstalled every third year.

This is missing a 8TB I have being serviced.
This is just what I have sitting in my desktop right now, not even my SAN box.
In 2011 this would have taken a good 15 disks, not the six I'm using, or the 4 I could be using.
>>
>>57228216
This
My build from 2013 is still holding up well
3.3ghz 6 core
16 gb ram (8 would have been fine)
geforce 660
250 gb ssd
300gb + 1tb hdds
Performance wise I'm fine, my only bottleneck at the moment is storage space.

Nah man, decent quality movies in 2007 were dvd5, 4.4GB. Purists downloaded DVD9, 7.9GB. Shit tier was 700MB DivX.

Today decent quality movies are 1080P in the 8-16GB range. Purists download BD-rips, ~40GB. Shit tier is 1080p @4GB.

With HEVC and 4K BD it'll be decent quality 4K = 20-30GB, purists ~100GB and shit-tier 8-10GB.

Yearly growth projections:

Magnetic storage: 20% (long term with abrubt jumps)
Copper/fiber Bandwidth: 50% (Nielsen law)
Compute (Silicon, including SSDs): 60% (Moore's law)

These technologies are accounted separately. Moore's law deals only with transistors.

I have 4tb worth of storage on my computer right now, should be worth like 200e ? Some of my drives are pretty old by now. And I'm like a small player compared to some guys
>>
>>57233557
Silicon is already dead and copper is unreliable for long distances
>>
>>57228216
realtalk: the problem is there is a limit to how small you can make write and read heads before introducing gargantuan error rates, and therefore how many tracks you can fit per disk. furthermore, that limit is about 8 times larger for write heads than for read heads. the current crop of 4TB drives are bottlenecked on this write-head limit

there is a new class of drives called shingled drives that overlay the tracks and push storage to the read head limit of ~32TB per disk. unfortunately the performance of these drives tanks catastrophically for random access (many orders of magnitude worse than random access on normal HDDs, which is already awful), so they are only viable in append-only scenarios like datacenter logging

to support shingled drives the filesystem has to be re-architected to append-only, e.g. a log-structured filesystem. this is pretty painful and may not happen; it's likely that HDDs are a dead end
>>
>>57231244
This isn't even much, you faggot. Go back to your fellow facebook-ers if you think this is weird.
>>
Guys, think about this for a moment. Let's assume 10+ TB drives become common for the average user. If file sizes stay pretty much the same, and hell, if they become smaller - since people are moving on to more efficient formats and containers.

Now think about the sheer amount of data that will be lost when eventually something happens to the drive. Kinda makes me afraid.

>>
>>57233951
Only random writes are limited on shingled drives; random reads are as fast as regular HDDs, so it's still fine for storing your anime and great for backups.

>physical limits, HDDs are a dead end
There are technologies being worked on (HAMR, for example) that will continue to push the physical limits further. And SSDs also have obstacles to continued cost reduction: advancements in silicon manufacturing are slowing down, fab costs are rising dramatically, and the smaller each cell is, the less endurance it has. It's entirely possible that SSDs will hit a price wall before HDDs do, but that's all too far in the future to predict. But HDDs are not a dead end, at least no more than any other storage.

10TB SSD < $200 can't come fast enough. They already have enterprise level 60 TB SSD. Where's the consumer level? Who the fuck gives a shit about 1TB SSD?

I just rip all my blurays to an emby server, at 30gb per rip, you only need around 130 movies to fill a 4tb drive, and anyone who's been collecting movies for a while probably has more than that.
