LeafPic has quite a ways to go. I'm not sure if this is a problem because I'm running CM, but try zooming in on a picture (using a double tap). Besides, Google artificially bumped up the version number - there were four 4.x releases, three of them that were named (ICS, Jelly Bean, Kitkat). Starting with Lollipop, they quickly ran through version numbers (5.0 and 5.1), Marshmallow (6.0), and now Nougat has (7.0 and 7.1). Marshmallow could've been a 5.2, and Nougat 5.3 and 5.4. Every new large Android iteration had a major UI change - something which didn't happen with MM and Nougat.
They're doing this to attract the iPhone crowd, and you look like you probably just switched.

You're taking my words out of context. 3 was frankly, unpolished garbage. Google was too shy to even release the source code. the majority of Android users haven't ever played around with it, or hell, they aren't even aware of its' existence. It truly was a beta product, destined to be used by few.
That was not the case with Lollipop. Yes, it had tons of bugs, but it was aimed for the whole mobile market instead of a ridiculously tiny part of the market (tablets at the time). It was a lot more polished.

Also, involving the design leap - one could say LP and MM were like 2.0, 2.2, and Nougat was like 2.3. A lot more stylish, and headed in the right direction. Damn, I loved Gingerbread.

1. For security, that is. I (speaking for myself only) have no problem with missing out on modern "features" if the OS I'm running runs just fine

Just FYI, I'm running the official CM 13 (nightlies), with no GAPPS. I get frequent security updates, and without proprietary google bits in my system partition with control over my whole phone, it's even more secure of a phone. I do run a couple of select proprietary applications, though - if I cared enough about F(L)OSS I would be running Replicant, or not using a smartphone at all.
