up to this year I was still able to use a 2011 iPhone 4s, with OS updates from Apple

You people are not wrong, with android you have to flash/update your ROM yourself if you would like longterm updates. However this deal of short updates is often reflected in the pricing of the device. If you would like this service are better with an IPhone where you pay for this. After all, why will be paid to develop all these custom tailored ROMs?nobody will? So the community does it for free.
