But what if I don't have a lot of experience?
>>
It's a preference thing. I prefer Fedora and I've been using GNU*/Linux for 4 years.
>>
>>57218628
Is there a way to use Gentoo with a 2GHZ cpu?

you use other inferior distro

If anybody's an expert on wasting time, it's a gentoo user.
>>
I still have it on my server but desu it isn't worth the time on desktops. Ubuntu just werks.

What do you do on Linux all day besides watching Chinese cartoons?

i dont watch korean cartoons i do work
i got my job using gentoo

I'll stick with arch

I've been using linux for 8 years and I'm still using Debian. Fuck your meme distribution.

You work 24/7?

no

So what do you do for entertainment on loonix?

watch vids on youtube, listen to music or just program

I agree

Sure, at least I don't wait an entire day to compile Firefox.
>>
>>57219165
You clearly have never used Gentoo. I compiled it in 1 hour.
You can do it faster in other distros, but performance is better on gentoo
>>
>>57219165
You don't wait because you have more than 1 core, arch luser.
>>
>>57219175
Even on a shitty Celeron with 4GB of RAM that I already need for VM and other heavy software? And why should I wait an hour for a 3% performance gain when my Alpine is already at top performance?

What if i have a lot of exp in Linux and I use FreeBSD?
>>
>>57218705
Fedora is more reasonable really. I mean I fucking hate it myself, but like you said it's about personal preference. The thing is that a lot of companies prefer RHEL, and by that I mean good fucking luck getting a server admin job if you don't have a background with RHEL. If not RHEL then Windows server, and actually having a background in both wouldn't hurt you at all. Fedora is not exactly RHEL but it's closer than Gentoo, so using it personally is a good start if you plan to go into that field.

For personal use it doesn't fucking matter at all what you use. OpenBSD is my favorite OS and if I could use it exclusively I would, but it's not ideal for a lot of things. Like CAD, 3D art, audio processing, and beyond maybe watching videos on YouTube it's not really good for entertainment. I love the OS but I still keep some Linux distros or another installed as well. I use OpenBSD where I can, and Linux for everything else.

I also like FreeBSD. Not as much. Not close, but for a more complicated server setup it's what I'd choose. OpenBSD is great for simple boot-and-forget servers, or routers/firewalls but if your needs are complex, FreeBSD has better features, ZFS, and is just easier all around to setup and maintain when things start becoming complex. As a desktop though OpenBSD is just a pure pleasure to configure and use do to it's inherent simplicity.

And no, I'm not trying to shill BSD here. None of them are OSes that are ideal for the average person, but then again neither is Gentoo, Arch, Slackware, or Debian. Fedora isn't unless they just happen to really believe in FOSS strictly, which the average person doesn't. They don't mind using proprietary shit, especially if it just works.' That's what most want out of an OS. I like to tinker and learn about different OSes inside and out, but I respect that most have absolutely no interest in that at all. People have different priorities, goals, and expectations, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Holy fuck an actual quality post on 4chan

I am a Mathematician, I tried to install Gentoo, wasted 2 days of my life configuring and building, etc. Finally try and boot to the os; kernel panic! so I ditched it and went to arch. I want to reattempt another Gentoo install, but arch does everything I want.

I'll take the bait.
How am I wasting my time using a different distro (namely debian with i3wm instead of a DE)?
How would using Gentoo make me save time in daily tasks?
>>
>>57218628
I don't care about gentoo much but that's a pretty neat wallpaper.

I used Gentoo to get a lot of experience in Linux, then I got rid of it so I wouldn't waste my time.

Oh is that what we're doing? By not installing gentoo, we're wasting our time?

That's an odd way of looking at it.

You clearly didn't compile glibc.

Years?
>>
>>57222352
I'm also curious. I definitely have more experience/knowledge with GNU/Linux than some people, but I know I still have a ton to learn.
>>
>>57219165
Firefox is a big, bloated, piece of shit browser that I use because there's no real alternative.
Because is a big piece of shit of 14 million lines of code, is to be expected that compilation takes from 30 to 120 minutes depending on the hardware power. Exactly for that reason gentoo has a precompiled ebuild of firefox, so you don't have to wait.

I compile it anyway because I don't update Firefox that often. And I have 4 cores, so I can compile firefox and still use my computer on other work
>>
No, it means I have other shit to do than configuring use flags and compiling everything from source
