Is this really the best open source email client for Android?

I wish Thunderbird would come to Android and that K-9 mail would fuck off.
>>
Why don't you just use the one wich comes preinstalled?
>>
>>57218261
fork it and you can add all those features, yo.

But you can use your other emails.
>>
All I need to do 99% of the time is to send simple emails to people I know, which K-9 Mail does pretty well.
>>

the stock app is even worse

I'm still trying to find a better alternative
also the icon is haram for my aesthetics

no
>>
>>57218411
>>I'm still trying to find a better alternative

there is none unless you want a pure botnet running 24/7

K-9 mail is the worst example of open source software on Android.
>>
>>57218454
I recently created a protonmail account
that is the only alternative that I have on my phone

even with that, it craps out on launch because I don't have the google store

stock apps is nice, but does not collapse conversations, and for me that is a must
>>

What is this?

That's probably pretty annoying, but I've never seen it happen myself.

Sure it would look nice but the current interface is fine.

Pretty stupid point desu. You can use any icon you want.

The problem with K-9 is that Google uses a special protocol for their push emails while everyone else has to use IMAP Push. So everyone wastes a fuck ton more battery than Gmail for google emails.

where is the catch? ads?

>"Lol nigger just fork it yourself. If you don't have any programming experience, better get learning because I'm not going to do it for you, I'll just work on my 20th unfinished project in Ruby and you can deal with it hahahaha"

This is the problem with open sores, no one takes initiative, no one cares if features are broken, you can "work around" them, or even
>YOU DON'T NEED THAT WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO DO THAT REEEE
Alternatively you're told to use yet another application which does that one thing the other should do, which fills up your storage and slows down the system.

On top of that, people dislike open sores because in most cases there is no one to take responsibility over a project. For example, that BumbleBee fiasco which wiped /usr/, or the OpenSSL. The power if proprietary software is that a business/individual can be held to account for the software they make, and that because they're being paid a salary, they have a reason to produce great software, and the motivation is there.

Stop using open sores SHIT.
>>
>>57228035
This is some weak bait.

Here's a pity (You)
>>
>>57228060
>Everything I don't like is bait.
>>
>>57228069
You have a good point and highlight some of the ways proprietary software triumphs open source, but if you present your argument in a completely childish manner then it's no surprise you weren't taken seriously.
>>
>>57228320
Dismissing good content over a poor form it was delivered in is pretty childish too.
>>
>>57228320
The only way Open Source triumphs anything is that in most cases it has zero cost and empowers developers. It does not empower users.
>>
>>57228378
I wasn't dismissing it, >>57228060 was.
>>
k-9 looks dated but works really good

I had some problems with google imap back then

when you add a google account, the thing 'just works'. But suddenly push stopped working correctly

I wiped that inbox config, and once I readded the account, push and imap worked again

I use k-9 for two reasons:
1 it is on fdroid
2 it supports conversations
>>
>>57218261
>Not Material Design

K-9 has many flaws, but Christ I fucking hate you OP.
>>
While we're talking about K9 being shit, does anyone know how to make it thread conversations properly? Unlike Gmail, it doesn't list the messages YOU sent in the chain, only the arriving ones, which completely ruins the point.
>>
>>57228603
It needs to be updated more regularly and it needs a complete UI overhaul.

I mean they fix a single bug per release.
>>
>>57228965
I remember I did search for a material design k9 about a month ago

there is a guy that forked the thing

but I don't know if he did any process at all

I checked it out after CloudMagic went poop, but it looks super-fucking-mega-giga-fucking-shady.

It's not just your average red flag, it's RED FLAG: THE APP.
So how do you trust them with your personal shit?

Also, is it like CloudMagic was?
Does it use an intermittent server to provide true push mail, or is it just marketing lies?

CloudMagic uses Amazon AWS machines that hook up to IMAP servers and check constantly. Once a mail arrive, they send out a true push message with GCM, etc. (It's a great app, but they made it very costly just recently. It's now 60 dollaridoos for a year, LOL!)
>>
>>57230732
>using a cloud emailing service

You are asking for it, anon
>>
>>57230746
Nonono, don't get me wrong.
I use AquaMail, but battery wise, CloudMagic was obviously better.

Now.
We have this redflag app, called "BlueMail" and it's got a second name, Typemail? Can't remember.
This shady developer has TWO of the same apps published.
There is nothing you can find out about them, about the app.
It's a mail app. Cool. That's it? Yeah...

And they have awkward high reviews, awkward everything.

Just why?

Read my second post:
>>57230775

I am all open to new things, I even used CloudMaigc, because the battery saving feature was such nice to have.

By the way...
Am I getting just fucking old, or are we going really backwards?
> iPhone 3GS I had
> true push mail for all accounts

> iPhone SE / iOS 10

Push thing applies to Android too, I use a Note 5.
Back then Google had an ActiveSync server.
Now? It's gone. "Use our app, goy!"

What the fuck is the "conversation view"? Is it interface where the only messages you see are the ones belonging to the same discussion thread?
>>
>>57235420
there are two types

1 replies on the same email get grouped into a single one

2 replies and your replies get grouped into a single one

>>57235420
It's where your mail client lists messages in, wait for it, a conversation. Receiving a mail from somebody and replying to it constitutes a conversation, any mails exchanged in response by those two recipients are then grouped into a single thread for convenience. It's unbelievably helpful when you use email to actually communicate with people. One of the biggest reasons why people like Gmail.

K9 and many others thread emails based on the sender, but ONLY those. So you end up with 9 mails from the same person in your inbox listed sequentially, without your own replies to them being shown. It's really annoying because you can't tell what they're actually replying to unless you expand the whole message and try tracing through a mess of >>>>>>>s. Seriously, try having a conversation that spans more than a few days and a pair of emails and you'll immediately realize how useful it is.
