I have 10 seagate hdds. Four 9 years old 160gb drives in raid running 24/7, two 5 years old 1.5tb drives running basically 24/7 and four 2 years old 1tb drives in raid. 0 problems

I had two 1tb caviar greens both of them died just weeks after warrantee expired, had an 500gb black drive died after 3 years, also had an 500gb blue drive in my laptop, died after 2 years...

Had two Toshiba 320gb drives, one of them died, the another one is full of bad sectors.

So that is my personal experience...

If you're going to store a bunch of shit (that you would rather not lose) then set up a RAID and (assuming you give a shit) backup within your budget.

Everything dies eventually, SSD, HDD, RAID or whatever. The idea is to let statistics work for you, not against you. Don't get a single ~4TB drive if you can only afford lesser drives in RAID.

Also, if you do RAID don't buy all the drives from the same source. If you get a bunch of drives from a bad production run, you're fucked (I've seen this problem at work with both Seagate and WD drives).

Cannot state this enough. Seagate failure rates are abnormally high from sheer experience. WD is much better (WD laptop drives are another matter, those are garbage).
