Is it true that macOS doesn't support NTFS, even though Linux supports it for free?! I was about to get a MacBook Pro for Final Cut Pro! My external media drives are in NTFS!

Please tell me this isn't true!

There's a reason why homOS X has less thab 10% marketshare even when people can easily pirate it.
>>
paragon (just pirate it) or osxfuse (foss, but you'll have to jb your mac)
>>
>buying a mac for abandonware
even apple refuses to use FCPX for anything
>>
>>57217746
So what's the reason why Linux only has 1.57% market share when it's availble for free ?
what are the other OS btw ?
>>
>>57217801
>Linux only has 1.57% market

Only on desktop. Across all computing devices, easily >50% share.
>>
You can enable writing to ntfs natively with some terminal commands. It's an experimental feature but it works pretty well. You can read ntfs out of the box.
>>
>>57217801
Because it's a server OS and hobbyist tried to make it into a desktop OS for free. The result? trillions of distros (ie linux variants) were created incompatible with each other. The few that are remotely useful are only good for ricing and posting on desktop threads.
>>
>>57217720
>brew install ntfs-3g

>vim /etc/fstab
>LABEL=NAME_OF_DRIVE none ntfs rw,auto,nobrowse

>>57217801
>spend some money and get compatibility with most major software used for professional work
or
>get a free OS that has very poor support and requires you to jump through many hoops to get something done unless you work with programming or network shit.
Most people have jobs and have no problem paying a relatively small sum if it means they can get their job done eithout hassle.
>>
>>57217783
>jailbreak your mac
Please tell me that isn't a thing.
>>
>>57217969
It's not, that guy is a retard
>>
>>57217720
First of all if you're doing video editing and youre using ntfs you're retarded as is. Ntfs only supports 4gb transfers. Movie files get real large bro
>>
>>57217848
>distros are mostly incompatible with each other

What do you mean by this. I use the arch wiki all the time for stuff on Fedora/CentOS?

I agree with everything else tho
>>
>>57217969
You will need to run it under Safe Mode to disable CSR (I think that's the name). It takes 2 minutes, though.
>>
>>57218030
not sure if bait or just plain retarded, but that's wrong

You're talking about FAT32, right? NTFS supports files up to 16 EiB.
>>
>>57217746
Well that reason is mostly that it works like shit unless on certain hardware combinations?
>>
>>57217720
>2016

>>
>>57218043
If that is true, then it would be sensible to call it jailbreaking, i guess. Last I knew is that you had to toggle a system setting to install 3rd party apps. That is way worse.
>>
>>57218083
It's only for installers that want to use
/System
/usr
/bin
/sbin
or any pre-installed OSX application.

/Applications, /Library and /usr/local are not protected by System Integrity Protection.

The setting you're talking about is probably the one in system preferences disabling installers from unidentified developers. You can switch that off with a few clicks though.

Damn, where's that full retard gif when you need it.
>>
>>57218330
FAT32 is antiquated.
>>
>>57218348
And that's why exFAT exists
>>
>>57219405
But how is the cross-platform support? It's good if you're centered around the Windows platform, but I've heard it's not so good if you use multiple operating systems.
>>
>>57219445
exfat has even less support than ntfs

>>57219461
So basically the best cross-platform filesystem is pretty much FAT32?
>>
>>57219445
Works flawlessly between windows and osx, which is what OP wanted.
>>
>>57217720
Read only support is there out of the box, but full support is just a single driver install away.

The reason for this is that NTFS is a closed standard and any support for it outside of Microsoft's own products is based on reverse engineering. Against that background companies like Apple and Linux distro developers are obviously going to be a tad afraid of lawsuits from Microsoft and hesitant to include full read/write drivers from the get-go.
