Hello /g/
A couple days ago I asked /g/ what to do with my defective Geforce 970 gtx (Gigabyte).

I sent it to the manufacturer and they sent it back, saying it did not fall under the warranty because of recklessness, the golden finger was damaged.

/g/ suggested that I use elecrical tape to make it function on 8x instead of 16x.

I tried this today, but to no avail. The pc still does not recognize my GPU. Any tips on what might make it function again?
>>
im just here to make fun of you breaking it in the first place
fat fingers etc... you know the deal

check first if your motherboard has 8x slots, some boards have the slit for a 16x size cards, but only the pins up to 8x

look at the black slots on this and thats what i mean
>>
>>57216741
My mobo (ga-78lmt-s2p) has only one 16x PCI-E 2.0 port

retard
>>
>>57216830
This, any component level repair shop could do it.
>>
I could fix that for you for $30. Get off /g/ and go buy some soldering equipment.

kek your fucked anon.

I live in the Netherlands, we do not have those stores.

>>57216830

are you confusing the golden finger that's broken on the right with the smd that is ok but has some arrow pointing to it on the left??

Seriously, wtf are you talking about? There is no damage on your photo.

Just be a good goy and buy a new GTX 1070.

All other GTX 970 photos that I can find have a golden finger like that.

But doesn't seem to be the same one. Unless they have one extra?
>>
>>57217040

if its just the smd then you can reflow the solder by putting teh card in an oven and heating it up to the reflow temperature.

there's no need for a soldering iron (and fucking shit up accidentally)
>>
>>57216678
Replace the caps.

Don't fucking do this.

you deserve it op kek. I remember you, you did tape into pcie lane and put into mainboard right?
>>
>>57217241

why not?

>>57217257
It's stupid, contaminates your oven, and doesn't fucking work.

it is not stupid, does not contaminate your oven and it does work.

don't get your info from wired.com lmao

>>57217221
You have your priorities fucked mate. A soldering iron is the proper tool to solder a few components, especially if they're passive ones. Why in the fuck would you heat up the chip as well? They're specced for 1 oven trip. Anything more and they can and will get damaged.
>>
What the hell is a golden finger you assfuck
>>
>>57217851
Not saying the oven is a good idea but.

>thinking someone without soldering experience can solder a tiny SMD component without fucking up
>>
>>57217876
But it's really not that hard.
>>
>>57217319
Don't get your info from 4chan, dumbass. There is literally no reason an oven will work.
>>
>>57217876
Soldering is fucking EZ. Those aren't even that small.
>>
>>57217851

>guy who doesn't have soldering experience with made in china $5 solder working on smd componenet

yeah no.

also smd would easily die if heated to much.

ovening is a perfectly safe operation as long as it's not too hot.
>>
>>57217916
> There is literally no reason an oven will work.

it's pretty clear at this point that you have no idea wtf you are talking about.

go be a duck somewhere else quack quack
>>
>>57217939
A capacitor with 2 pads can literally be done by holding it against the pads and touching the pad with a pre-tinned soldering iron briefly. That's all it takes.
>>
>>57217963

until you make a mistake.

ovening is guaranteed to work.

also doesn't require the purchase of a soldering iron.
>>
>>57218010
>ovening is guaranteed to work.
A silicon chip has limited amount of times it can survive the oven. Hell most of them are only capable of the initial production oven run.
Also big components can drop off the pads. Factories use masks to keep them all in place.
>>
>>57218047
>Hell most of them are only capable of the initial production oven run.

false

>Factories use masks to keep them all in place.

this is completely unneccesary because liquid solder can structurally support components
>>
>>57217111
C596 and C590 are broken off.
>>
>>57218075
>I've never done professional production on PCB's
Just shut the fuck up retard. Go ahead and put your shit in the oven and enjoy your degradation and eventual failure.

Bigass mosfets can and do break surface tension of solder by the way. Unnecessary my ass.
>>
>>57218104

>he has never set foot in a PCB production plant

oh man you are making me laugh

>Bigass mosfets can and do break surface tension of solder

not if you are not a corner-cutting chinaman and use a correct size of pad you third rate derelict they wouldn't even let into Shenzhen lmao

I'm not reading that shit.

Because you're a stupid jackass who can't infer which scales people are using. You don't see me going on European websites and whining that people are using a different one.

Putting electronics in an cooking oven is agreed upon by everyone but dumb gamer children on /g/ to do absolutely fucking nothing.

You can screencap this and save it to your "Internet arguments I won" folder, I'm not wasting my time trying to explain rational concepts to you.
>>
>>57218556
Their Pascal cards are literal housefire risks though. They're planning to send out extra thermal pads free of charge to try and solve the problem. Of course, you have to take the card apart to fit them.
>>
>>57218578
Wouldn't that void the warranty?
>>
>>57218491
>Putting electronics in an cooking oven is agreed upon by everyone

except everyone agrees the reverse is true, and that only stupid wired.com readers think otherwise because some nu-male made an article making fun of it.
>>
>>57218604
Some companies are fine with you removing the cooler (to fit a water block or whatever), some aren't. If there's a security sticker over one of the screws on the back, you can probably assume they aren't.

EVGA allow it, although they won't cover damage caused by you doing so. I can see them getting sued to fuck if they go ahead with this and then refuse to replace any cards that get fucked as a result though, given it's both their design flaw and their official solution.
>>
how do you even fuck up a card like that

Melting solder

He's right. Louis is saying a damaged graphics chip being reflowed is not a fix and may only work again temporarily, if it even does.

That's the point of the video, nothing to do with soldering individual components, which a lot of people consider safe I guess.

I'm no expert but if u taped the lanes shouldn't the problem be fixed? Since it should switch to 8x, the defective lane should be canceled out. So the problem lies elsewhere?
>>
dude, you're being trolled by idiots. Those capacitors were never there.

Look at your card. How many SMD components are 'missing'? A whole bunch. Why? Because the pads were there in case they were needed after testing, they weren't, the component was never there. It costs less to just leave the useless component off than re-design the board.
