Seeing wired use the tag "AT&T Is Buying Time Warner Because the Future is Google" sums up why it's happening. Google Fiber is threatening the future of all these money hungry ISP that are reliant on overpriced service.

"Why buy home telephone service when cell phones make them redundant?"
These package sellers know their days are doomed when the common way entertainment is consumed is via the internet and the most common thing the normal user uses is their smartphone.

AT&T is trying to purchase Time Warner: The parent company of numerous TV networks as well as premium movie networks.
What's funny is that AT&T attempted to do this back in the 80s with landlines. FCC promptly shut that shit down. Not sure if it'll be done again seeing as what's being sold is content to be delivered to customers not the transportation vehicle (I.e. fiber, coax, copper, etc) to deliver it.
