Being poor and raspberry pi's go hand in hand.

You could easily hook a battery/screen/small keyboard to a pi. You can even get pre-built screen/battery shields that just plug into the headers.
>>

You could just buy a used thinkpad for $60.
$60 won't even buy you the accessories required to make a raspi laptop usable.

surf the web on that tiny screen? can do the same with my phone or laptop and the screen layout makes reading more comfortable.

coding? calculator? i already have gear for that.

Because they still haven't come up with one that has a laptop-size keyboard (sans the bezels and trackpad), and a folding screen twice the size of the keyboard. I'd get one right away.

I actually like the form factor with the keyboard and the joysticks and would use it if there was one with a good price/performance.

Most of my work is text and terminal I could do most of my work through something like that.

Most of the time I am not even writing new scripts just altering previous work and executing commands.

It works fine, but the case around the right hinge is basically gone, so now the screen doesn't open or close right. Suffering.
>>
>>57214665
I do. It's called a cell phone.
>>
>>57218313
Figured I should probably show my suffering.
I used some hot glue to help support the screen, since this side of the hinge is just a pin that rotates in a (now gone) plastic socket.
>>
>>57218723
It seems to still open/close nicely if I do it it carefully, but with the hinge being damaged like this it makes me not want to carry it around, so that I can extend its life as long as possible. You know, basically the exact opposite of what I picked it up for.

Yeah, ask anyone who's ever run Linux on an SGI system how far the CPU architecture support got them.

so what do you guys actually do with your old handheld computers or whatever ultraportables? you have a very low res screen which practically kills its usefulness in modern applications, speaking of which they have so puny processors and especially ram that they can't run anything modern. so they are left as novelty products pretty much, right?

I mean sure using a small font with a super minimal window manager makes good use of the small screen, but the PPI is still pretty bad so even if your processing power is enough to open 4chan (which in itself isn't really an achievement, but shows how little UMPCs can do) you can't really browse comfortably. I'd say the same about phones so before you get hot on my ass about that phones are shitty for browsing too. but at least they have the oomph to function somewhat

eee pcs and shit like that, I had them back in the day when they were the hottest meme... I could actually browse the internet with that awful 11" screen I had in my whatever HP but as time moved on it became so gutless I just gave it away. it was shit for browsing anyway as the screen was so low res at 1024x768 or something. just had a T60 with that resolution and unless I was configuring xorg with the terminal I found it unuseable. even though you had no window borders it was still too little

so when you have something that barely pushes VGA, what do you honestly do with it? sure you can write code but do you really? do you really enjoy typing with that keyboard?
>>
>>57223608
Some of them can be given new life for certain tasks through things like FreeDOS. As for the later atom ones like eeepcs and the dell mini910, they still hold up pretty well if you use things like noscript.
>>
>>57218723
>>57218749

aww man i had an asus laptop that had the same type of hinge failure and that photo pains me. Eventually it broke the other hinge from the increased load.

Absolute Bone Cancer. Never thought a physical fault would kill a computer so completely.
>>
Well my parents still send me Christmas presents even though I live 2000 miles away so maybe I'll ask for a Jornada this year...
>>
>>57223827
I know anon, it's the worst feeling. Especially with something like a libretto. The hot glue is taking up the extra weight it would put on the other hinge for now, but I still wish I could get parts for it. People seem to want like 60$ for dead libretto even, which I'm not paying just for a hinge.
>>
>>57214665
Nigga, what do you think smartphones are?
>>
>>57214857
>>57214665
I used one of those every day for like six years, until it broke and NEC had stopped making them. I kinda miss it honestly.

Nowadays this is the best I can do, and it runs on MIPS. Does anyone still develop for that?

>you have a very low res screen which practically kills its usefulness in modern applications
Don't give a fuck if it's pretty as long as I can read it.
>speaking of which they have so puny processors and especially ram that they can't run anything modern
Don't give a fuck about the version numbers as long as it does it.

There's more to do with a pocket computer than mindless web consumption which a phone is much better for anyway. I love my 95LX as an information management device, and even anemic shitty hardware like that can still solve a lot of problems and keep track of information better than I can.
>>

>>
>>57214665
I always wanted one, but there was the point when I realized that I might as well just use a normal laptop for times when I needed to travel and would have a place to setup on occasion, and I'd carry my Palm everywhere for really mobile computing (it was a cheap-ass m100, like literally fucking everyone else had) whenever I needed to do shit on the go.
like, this was back in 2001 or 2002

bought a netbook in like 2010 for proper on the go computing -- for straight computing tasks, it was fine (mind you, I'd done a lot of shit like 3D modeling on a laptop from 2001, so the netbook was head and shoulders faster than a lot of machines I'd used around the time, I dunno why the fuck people complain about how weak they were unless they're all really fucking impatient, apart from the bit that's below)
it actually sucked kind of hard for web browsing because lol page bloat (which is kind of embarrassing, since not even two years before, I'd been browsing the internet just fine on that 2001-era laptop I had that gave up the ghost in 2009)

In modern times, it turns out that you can do a stupid amount of computing on a phone.
typing sucks, but you can pretty much autocorrect everything but code and have what's effectively tab completion for every word, and you wouldn't be coding much on an HPC anyway
really, with a graphing calculator emulator and a good text editor, I can do a shit-ton from it, even offline
and you can do tiny bits of scripting for little shit
and it's actually kind of decent for browsing the internet with and doing normal consumer shit with

the phone as a useful handheld computer instead of just a calling and internet device is a realization that I've only come to in the last couple of months, I'd been missing the software I had on my Palm years ago without realizing that yes, I can actually do that sort of job on my phone, and do it better
>>
>>57226002
I fell for the shills unfortunately. They were everywhere on here like around a year ago briefly.

Man try two part epoxy (araldite) You will be supprised how controllable and gooey it can be with out getting into the hinge and how it can basically conform to the outer plastic case

I was in a hangar at the time and used some special potting compound and after a coat of paint it was a seamless fix.

tldr: hot glue is not going cut it.
