Red pill me on pop3 vs imap, /gee/. I like imap's ability to sync in real time, but I also like pop3 actually downloading emails onto my computer by default instead of keeping them on a third party server. Which do you recommend?

We don't know, which best suits your usage case?

Oh, you're a /pol/cunt, no wonder you can't read information and formulate an opinion of your own without some groupthink backing you up..

Pop3 is deprecated in the modern world. Imap clients download the emails as well but sync any changes.

Dont use pop3. With IMAP you just sync, meaning that you'll get a mirrored syncable maildir on your machine. I use it with mu4e and mbsync, if I read mail in emacs it will be tagged as such on gmail or my uni mail as long as the sync daemon gets to run.
pop3 was fine back when email services had small storage limits and you only checked your mail on one computer
but nowadays with practically-unlimited space on free services and people using multiple computers to access email, imap makes more sense
pop3 can still be useful, but if you don't know what to use, use imap

Forgot to add, you should leave that red pill shit back on pol where it belongs.

imap is better in every conceivable way.
