Ahahaahahahahaha
>>
>>57191685
How does it feel to be not utilizing 100% of your hardware?
>>
>>57191740
Not him but weak bait. Linux uses RAM better than Windows for example.
>>
>>57191740
LMAO, take a load of this guy, probably installed linux once with shit poorly configured for his machine, kernel logs screaming "dude wtf am I supposed to do with this", all the while somehow managing to display graphics without v-sync, and thought windows is somehow more powerful because you don't need to be non-retarded to use it.
>>
what is the point of installing linux on virtual machine? did you really downloaded a lubuntu iso and boot it just to make this thread. i'm lonely too but jesus, you're craving for attention
>>
>>57191740
>I have no idea what I'm talking about
>>
>>57191676
To be honest, it IS a meme. Between increasing hardware performance, better virtual machines, and hardware passthrough, there's literally no reason to run Linux on the metal anymore. I can use Windows and Linux at the same time without any trouble at all just by keeping Linux in a VM. I can get all the same work done, I still get to play around with a Linux system and configure it how I like, all while knowing that I still have a stable desktop-oriented-from-the-start OS there when I need to do anything that isn't Linux-specific, and if Linux fucks anything up (more often than I'd like), I can just reboot the VM instead of fiddling with GRUB & co.

>inb4 stupid wintard who's never used Linux
Linux was my primary OS for ~3 years on the desktop. It's honestly just not a great desktop OS.

You are a lying paid Microsoft shill. Leave.

So what you're saying is it uses less of your hardware?

Yes. You have to go back.

Sure

You have to go back.
>>
>>57192342
No, it uses it better. Windows loads programs and wastes the rest of RAM, Linux preloads stuff so it's faster and actually uses 100% of it.
>>
>>57192472
Except that's wrong.

I do it for CTFs, but I also have it installed to a thumb drive, for...reasons.

>my kernel knows the future

How the fuck could it preload stuff if it doesn't know what you're gonna need to load in the future dumbass? The Linux kernel caches stuff to your unused RAM, which is not the same as "preloading". Fag.

no he's saying it allows you to use more of your hardware for your work not for the nsa

turn off or lower your page to about 1gb and see what happens

Put a VM inside the VM that is running in a VM of a VM'd system.
Then, in that VM browse /g/ behind seven proxies in each VM, outside in the woods over satellite.

>Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

Just read all of this, it's not that much
>>
>>57193352
It CAN BE used without GNU, but mostly isn't. I'm pretty sure 99% of all distros use GNU.
>>
>>57193349
Actually, Windows itself uses around 300MB. The rest is drivers and running applications. Not exactly a huge deal.
>>
>>57193385
In which case, it's up to the distribution maintainer to decide whether or not it should be called GNU/Linux.

For example, Debian GNU/Linux is GNU/Linux. Gentoo Linux is just Linux.
>>
>>57193385
Yeah, it CAN BE used without GNU, so why should we call it GNU/Linux?
>>
>>57193385
99% of all distros INCLUDE GNU, which are just copies/ports of Unix programs. If the kernel itself didn't rely on gcc to be compiled, you could have a full Linux distro with a kernel, drivers, init system, display manager, window server, application framework, multimedia libraries, web browser, desktop utilities and games without having to brand a single iota of it with a wildebeest. Most people don't need or even know about fucking GNU sed or wget, they're far from the most important components for an end user, and only exist as part of dev toolsets because nobody had to bother with writing a replacement since they more or less work fine due to their utter simplicity. You could also just use Busybox or BSD or something else from a non-GNU project if you wanted to.

idk what you mean by runnin applications
thats some mystical number
the lowest ive seen 7sp1x64 is maybe around 450 but only for a very little while
that is with cache set to be system managed

the point is you can not use chrome and a couple of other things without windows shitting itself if you don't have more than 2gigs of ram because half of it gets used by the os not by your programs
and linux desktops can work fine with ~140mb and no swap for X and the rest of the os

compare 1gig with a 100mb for a normal desktop to wosk
