Red pill me on computer science, /g/

Is it any good? Are the job prospects good? Any of you finished them and earning enough?

Seems like a horrible idea to me as a medschool student.

>Seems like a horrible idea to me as a medschool student.

Nice humblebrag thread, faggot.

I'm 4th year and I already have an internship, so unemployment doesn't seem to be a worry.

ABET accreditated Comp Sci degree holder here.

You are among a sea of neets, chinks, and Indians that will ALWAYS undercut you.

Get into start ups, and get really good at doing one thing. That's the only way to do something good.

Or you could always accept a lower wage and go into a big company then move on to project management.

It always baffles me how this is somehow a problem for Americans

>neets, chinks and indians

How are you competing with trash? How inept are you?

Yes, I am biased as I have a BSc in CS. It has gotten me my current and past jobs, and I NEVER have to deal with any people other than those of my ethnicity.
>>
>>57187781
Oh yes those big companies like Facebook and Google sure are paying their employees pennies.
>>
>>57188232
They, for the most part, are not trash. They're just not used to the level of quality that we expect.

If you work for a defense contractor or something with a low level language, then your BS comes in handy.

If you want to work for a tech and software company that is actually making money, then you're working with the latest meme language or the like. No degree can prepare you for that.
>>
>>57188267
>then you're working with the latest meme language or the like
Why, actually? IMO there is almost never a problem with the more older languages themselves, it's more like the existing frameworks are a piece of shit.

And switching to a new language just rises the need for another framework that has a good chance to be shitty again.

From my experiences most CS students at my university were Mac/Windows users, no one I knew voluntarily used Linux besides for some papers that involved shell scripting and routing protocols. One in particular I know is dumb as bricks, keeps failing his classes and loves Apple because 'its simple' - just like him.

I find myself in Skype calls tutoring a few students but I'm appalled at the lack of understanding of basic data structures from some fourth year students. One still can't get his head around variable types. I don't know how he's gotten this far through many projects and assignments that were code heavy. The end of second year had us doing internships, third a major project for a client and this guy still gets through.

Because people are actually too lazy to dedicate the time and resources to the old way, and programmers who can actually achieve amazing results in C aren't worth the cost.

Think of it in the same sense as how we stopped trying to optimize software to use memory wisely and instead just started throwing more memory at the problem, or more cpu, etc
>>
>>57188311
Well. Most new languages start out with good intentions and usually are trying to improve a specific thing or make programming more accessible, ie node.js. Think of it like an expanded toolbox.

But I think of it this way. Chinks, neets, and Indians look for a couple of things. Ease, how much money can I make, and how can I get out of this shit hole I'm in. So, they learn whats popular. They really just learn to program (ie code) rather than actually engineer to solve problems. In order to stay ahead and prove some type of value, I'd wager that hipsters start using a certain language to try and stay one step ahead of those third worlders. Eventually, it gains enough clout that the third worlders pick up on it. Then it's onto the next language to try and differentiate themselves. That's just my theory, anyway.

This is one goddam pic that ACTUALLY triggers me.

>She found a doctor willing to help
>But she could not afford the $25,000 costs
If anyone helped her mutilate her nervous system, they should be shot.
That shit should be a felony.

And these people make me fucking sick...

These bastards should put their resources into helping find a CURE for paralysis, NOT BECOME paralyzed!
That's not the fucking way paralysis patients want to be sympathized with, god dammit. These people are disgusting.
>>
>>57188387
I'd like to add that thick framed glasses with flannel shirt hipsters go to these startup places and start saying shit like, "node.js is the newest, best thing." Or "Ruby on rails is just so much fucking better than PHP." These tech entrepreneurs and clueless business people eat that shit up until it becomes standard.

Next thing you know, old Keveen (because Kevin was just too mainstream) is back there again saying how Swift is such a good language over Ruby and Objective C.

It seems to be the cycle.

If you are smart and dedicated as yourpoo you can work for CERN, ESA or even NASA after good cs (they have alot of inters for students).

majority of people with CS degree, are just ugly virgins that were sitting in front of pc watchiing porn or playing games and they had to choose something because rich parents want kids to have degree.

Majority of them hate cs and math, because they want to code games, unfrotunetly CS is based on math so they try to pass all exams with at least effort.

After 4 years they know as much as at the beginning of 1st semester.

desu senpai.

On majority uni atleast in eu you can choose CS. On EE faculty CS will have alot of hardware stuff, coding in asm and, you have to expect alot of theoritical ee.

On normal CS on CS faculty you will have networks, Algos, web dev, alot of hll and software engineering.

There is also CS on """Theoretic faculty""", you will have less classes, ie. on first 2 years (70% of subjects will be math and math based + intro programming and physic, on 3rd year with enough knowledge in discrete math and linear algebra you will learn algorithms).

That last one is hardest but also most promising in future.

You can learn everything from normal CS is no your free time, but with high math knowledge you will be able to understand how it works.

Uni math will also open doors for financial institutions job and science job ie. Cern, ESA, NASA, NSA etc.

If you are going to study you have to choose. Its a great opportunity with dedication after 4 years you can eaisly find job with 130k $+.

but you have to choose, pajeet my sobm are you going to drink and fuck 4 years at uni or are tyou going to study hard?

Some uni have also combined studies, 40% more subjects than on normal, but you can make two degrees at the same time, from math and cs

While that is true, at the same time it is also ... untrue.

Hear me out. I am also a gamer, and I enjoy playing Civ 4. Yesterday Civ 6 came out, and one thing that I noticed was how much smoother it felt compared to Civ 4.

And that's true for a lot of more modern software. And I think the problem for that is that in the "olden days" people were so cramped with the limits of their resources that they had to start implementing stupid algorithms to make shit running someone. You can still pretty much see that in emulators like pcss2, which does not support loading in an entire ISO into memory because the binary is 32 bit only, and there's simply not enough virtual memory available. If they COULD load in the entire ISO via mapping it would reduce a lot of wasted cycles for, I dunno, seeking on the drive. It would reduce the complexity of the program.

A lot of older limitations are gone. Which means that people nowadays have a chance to implement things properly. But then they start to become stupid and say "Well, modern machines are fast enough, so I am not going to give any shit about my code".

And then they decide to invent new languages and new frameworks, because "it's fast enough". And that leads to programs using a LOT more resources than necessary, and then they start building things on top of those things, and in the end it's an unperformant clutsterfuck piece of software stack that is nearly impossible to optimize.

Most tech companies making money do so because they provide superior technology. A diminishing amount of them do so because they're providing some sort of fad meme product.

I work at a very small company and I'm probably the least educated person here. Even the people doing full-time support are engineers.
