>alternatives to virtualbox?

I am on arch + i3
virtualbox had issues on it for some time
going for older pre-Qt versions worked fine
but now with kernel update 4.8 it refuses to start

I love virtualbox for its ease of setup
and its performance, which for basic tasks feels almost native
I remember I tried qemu + whatever the other part of the name was
and it took me ages to setup, and in the end the way mouse felt and general performance... damn I could not stay with it...

did it get better? or are there some tools to help?
or is there something better?

tried it
3 times I think

general feel is that its bit cumbersome to setup
and after its finally done and running it runs like shit on my skylake i5
the mouse it tries to grab can be fixed, but general lack of responsiveness and delay when doing shit.

Sure I can dive straight in to forums and groubs and try million settings, I did, but if you spend 2 hours trying to fix the shit, you get bit salty about it...

anyway, since I made the thread, I installed vmware workstation player going by the arch wiki
I always had kinda aversion to it, cause its not in repos or something
but now I actually bothered.. have win 8.1 machine set-up in matter of 5 minutes
works and feels fine, similarly to virtualbox

got bit less interface settings and shit, I guess thats in pro version, but I think it will do till they fix virtualbox

But hasn't VirtualBox always used Qt for its UI? IIRC it used Qt back in 2007/8 already, when it was still called Innotek VirtualBox.

No I got it working sort of. Hit Ctrl+c to use scale mode. Then you can get into the windows resolution options to change it to something less ridiculous. Reboot. Scale mode has been fixing it for me.

In gnome, vbox just crashes my entire x session, so it's even worse there. I *have* to use i3 to use vbox right now

and test it on win7/win8/win10 easily

I don't want to start another thread about VM's but my question is: Is there a way to make the virtual machine be able to use 100% of the resources without virtualizing them, I want to be able to run everything in the VM as if it was running natively including the GPU (no pass-through).
>>
>>57189063
no
>>
>>57187212
I guess this is an appropriate thread to ask this question in.

I'm running Windows 7 and want to play around with Linux in a virtual machine. I've tried Virtual Box but it's slow. Is VMware Player a better option?

still have it here
its just shitty and slow

mouse is laggy, programs react like shit

maybe there are some hidden settings and optimalization
but I tried the most common ones, mention in wiki and on few forum posts and it did not help

so yeah, keep looking for your meme retard

You've tried to make it sound like you did made it work when you really didn't, so yeah, it is what you wrote.

Then you didn't make it work, is that concept difficult for you to grasp?
>>
>>57189384
But I did, thats why it run actual virtual machine.
It worked.
judging performance is not judging if something works or not.

seems thats the difficult part for you.
>>
>>57189433
Bit you didn't, you almost made it work, but if the VM performance was shit, it's becuse you couldn't make it work.

Seems that's the part you can't really understand.

No, you didn't, and it didn't "just underperformed", it didn' work. Stop lying to yourself.
>>
>>57189534
>it didn' work
yes it did
we dont use the term "something works" to judge its performance comparable to something else

I am sorry if this concept is troubling you, but thats the truth
>>
>>57189576
>yes it did
No, it didn't.
We don't use the concept "something works" for whem something almost work but doesn't.

I'm sorry if this concept is troubling you, but that's the truth.
>>
if your VMs are slow, you are doing something wrong. add more memory to the VM or RTFM

>>57187698
I had this problem with my wm in gnome.

I just flipped to floating window mode on virtual machine boot.

Then switched back to the tiling once boot up completed.

Solved nigger.
>>
qubes is OSS built on hypervisor Xen, I found it incredibly easy to effectively use.

It gets funded by OTF
Details:https://www.opentech.fund/project/qubes-os

It doesn't support non integrated gpu's officially, though as with any linux project, people find ways to make it work.

Trying to not be a useless cunt
>>
>>57189603
What makes you think it did not work and rather choose the term almost work?
>>
>>57189664
because, based on what you wrote, that's what happened. And before you asked somw retarded shit like "exactly what part made you think that", read what you've wrote and you'll see it.

what makes you think it did work and choose the term "just underperformed"? Because that's not what happened.

Becasue the post is really, really clear, and you're some stranger online, so I can't really trust you, but then again, you weren't able to read the wiki to make your VM work, so you're probably really this stupid. So, will you answer my question? Or are you gonna keep avoiding it?

>>

Well good that we cleared it out.
I read it.
It was unclear and unspecific to me still.

so if you can be more specific now at this very moment, instead of keeping referring to it and talking about it, which is not very helpful, that would be great
