I like Debian because the way I set it up is nice, Linux Libre 4.8.2 kernel, all the latest self compiled stuff like GTK3.22 and QT5.7 along with SysVinit and Wayland running the latest KDE desktop, fast and honestly I wouldn't trade it for the world, I don't even use a package manager I just have everything compiled myself, it honestly feels incredible

if you spend the time compiling everything why don't you use Gentoo? I'm sure it would be a better and more seamless way to do that.

GNOME 3.22 + Wayland + BTRFS

Has anyone had experience with Qubes? The premise sounds intriguing, but also sounds like something that if you run into problems could be hard to unfuck.

Been on Fedora for years now, bouncing around a few DEs, settled on Mate. I might take another crack at Gnome though sometime, a fair few people seem to be saying it's improved of late.

Lads, I can't decide, Debian or Fedora for desktop (VM)? I'm new to Linux, but don't suggest Ubuntu, I tried it and didn't like it.

>>57191390
Well since you're new: Debian, then switch to Arch in two months, then switch to Gentoo in another two months, then switch to Ubuntu six months later

I used to distro hop a lot, but I settled at Ubuntu Gnome because it's stable for my laptop. I use my laptop daily so I can't afford for it to crash, otherwise I'd mess around with Arch
>>
>>57191414
I shall begin this quest.
>>

If you don't like Ubuntu, I'm not sure what difference using Debian will make for most people (assuming you aren't confusing distro for desktop environment). After far too many years distro-hopping, the chief differences seem to be:

1. DE - which you can change easily, so default DE really only matters if you're incredibly lazy. Entry level concern only.
2. package manager (probably the big one for me, I prefer yum/DNF to apt)
3. installer. Some are pain-free and flexible, others are stuck feeling 15 years out of date.
4. life-expectancy. Unless you have a good reason not to, avoid derivatives of derivatives; Ubuntu-based distros are the worst offender here. There's always hoards of them popping up and then disappearing. Stick with distros that have a proven record of not disappearing after a year or two of updates.
5. community/documentation. It'll save you a lot of hassle when you inevitably need to debug something. Often a continuation of point 4. A lot of documentation is the same for all distros though. e.g. I use Fedora, but most of the Arch wiki is still relevant info.
6. stability - not the crippling issue it once was now in most distros. Avoid alpha releases and you'll probably be fine.

There's other shit like ethos, but to the end user that's mostly irrelevant.
