SO, I want to switch from PC to MAC, but I'm
not looking to spend $2000.
Looking at some older Mac Mini's and I'm
curious if they're worth the price
Here are my specs on the PC I'm using now
x4 AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.20 GHZ Processors
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
64bit OP System
The mac mini I'm looking at has these specs
C2D @ 2.4GHZ
4GB RAM
320G Hard Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 320M
Any thoughts? I don't really use my PC for
anything besides web browsing, watching
Youtube videos (1080p), and HD movies
(also 1080p). Not a big gamer.
why not buy an actual mac mini

Why not build a hackintosh

That's a downgrade, are you retarded?
>>57182926
>downgrade
macOS more than makes up for it though.
>>57182888
The cheapest one they have that are current
start at $499, without a CD/DVD drive, plus
I've read the older ones are still decent to use
if you don't need them for a ton of heavy
graphic gaming. That's why I don't want to
spend almost $300 more.
>>57182926
I know it's a downgrade.
I guess I should have asked more questions.
I don't mind if I'm down grading, I don't use my
PC for any heavy gaming, or anything that
requires a lot of UMPH. Like I said, I just
browse the web and watch videos. I'd like
to still watch HD 1080p videos with no
trouble, if that's possible.
I'm not sure, with the specs I mentioned, if my
wants can be reality.

>>57182954
Why get a new computer at all then? Chrome is going to work just as well on either one. Install a linux distro with a MacOS theme if you want something different.
>>57182954
How much DO you want to spend?
Not a Macfag but I'm in the same boat you're in.
>>57183001
My max is $300

Here's what I have now.
It's about 5 years old, very clunky.
Makes a ton of noise.
It's done me well in the time I've had it,
and I love the graphics when it plays videos
BUT, I just started working for a company who
out sources for Apple, plus I have an iPhone,
so I realized I no longer want something this
big with an operating system I don't really care
about.

Those are some pretty valid reasons. A c2d model is a big downgrade though. Maybe sell your desktop and try for a better one?
An older iMac is a better investment. 21" ones have nice screens on them.
>>57183016
I'd get an older 2010 model like this one.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-A1311-21-5-3-06ghz-core2duo-4GB-500GB-Mavericks-MS-office-2009/232119191411?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D39861%26meid%3Dca3a57bd2ab742759fc176b096d0d78f%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351881019153
Good enough to browse the web and slightly more powerful than the mac mini.
>>57182886
Any computer made in the past 10 years can display 1080p videos.
>>57182886
Build a little mini FM2+ build with an A8-7600 APU then. You'll only spend like $250 and you can upgrade it later if you want to. Anything with an apple logo is fucking garbage especially that constantly overheating fag mini.
>>57183140
Thanks for pulling that up for me.
When you say slightly, what do you mean?
Is it a difference I would notice?
Btw you get a noice ~30% overall performance improvement and a free backup GPU (iGPU) as well with the A8-7600.
>>57183111
Where would I go about selling my PC?
I read that custom build it hard to sell
all together-- You're better to sell the parts
>>57183263
>Where would I go about selling my PC?
ebay, craiglist, ect
>I read that custom build it hard to sell
Not really, it's still a computer in the end. Just add some buzzwords like gaming or something as bait.
>>57183177
The A1311 iMac has an Intel dual core @ 3.06ghz. The mac mini clocks @ 2.4ghz not much of a difference but better. The big difference between the two is that the iMac has an on board graphics albeit slow by todays standards, where as the Mac mini uses integrated graphics which is where the older Mac Mini's stumbles right out of the gate.
>>57183313
One more thing, can I install an OS other than homos x on this little thing or will I have driver incompatibilities and such?
>>57182886
Lord Wendell has a video on making a pretty beastly PC that happens to be a mac on the cheap
also for what purpose? OSX a shit

>>57182886
don't bother with C2D shit. look for a 2012 i5 or i7 model. Why 2012? because that's the last model year with upgradeable RAM but the first model year with USB3. they go for $200-250 on the 2nd hand market. (i got one for $240 canadian back in the spring)

Are you literally retarded?
Mang, save up and buy a fuckin 2012 MacBook pro or something
>>57183648
no one is advocating this guy plunk down money for c2shit you autist.
If you want a Mac specifically for the OS, make yourself an hackintosh.
>>57182886
I currently have to work with a Mac Mini from 2015. It's incredible how slow that thing is. IT kept trying to fix some software issues to no avail (just works eh?) and decided to switch the hdd with an ssd. If you're not willing to do the same, prepare for some really slow experience using it.
Better go hackintosh
>>57183068
you can google search "mini pc" or "mini pc for browsing". There's some pretty good offers around the $150 mark, that are totally adequate for watching videos and stuff, plus they look alright and are really tiny so you can hide it somewhere too. If you mostly just browse, something like Ubuntu may be a better OS than OSX depending on your setup (multi-monitor? do you often have many windows open?)
>>57186462
no shit is OSX slow on a HDD. it's been that way since Mavericks pretty much. if you buy a mac mini and don't want to change the stock HDD to a SSD you should be gassed.
>>57186526
sierra has better multi monitor support than ubuntu and windows at this point IMO.
>>57182895
Unless you already have at least half of compatible components laying around it usually costs the same or more than buying a older mac. It only makes sense if you need a better individual component (GPU, storage) than what you get with a prebuild.
