1080p 144hz G-sync.

get out grampa 1440p is the standard now

1440p, if your GPU can't handle it get a new one

144hz if you play games, 60hz if you don't

1440p is good up to 32", after that you want 4k

1440p 144hz. You can upgrade you GPU for a while without maxing out your monitor's performance. With 4k 60 it's not too difficult, 1440p 144hz is more demanding I believe. Plus it's like 250 man

seriously, for monitors like 27" and 1440p above you need 144hz so your desktop isnt choppy as fuck

the difference between 4k60hz is less than that of 720p to 1080p I wouldn't worry about it

>>57180163
Id say 1440p is the point of diminishing return. And thats for screens 23"-27" anything more or less and you're retarded in 2 different ways.

Ok, first off, and this is important

do you need more screen real estate? does everything feel cramped to you?

If no, then fuck it, get a 1080p
If yes, get a 1440 at 27-32 or that one 4k at 40inch that is an ips

second, know every fucking number on the box is a goddamn lie outside of resolution, they literally fake every mother fucking number, find a third party site and look for static contrast ratio.

Whatever you get should be around 1000:1 or 1:1000 i forget the way this number is displayed. some monitors go well over 1000 up to 3000~ with one peaking at 5000, that is the single most important thing about a monitor, not ips v tn not 1080 v 2160 no free v g v no sync it's the contrast ratio, this for a non professional is the single biggest thing that determines image quality.

second would be 120/144 hrz as this IS something you will feel regardless if you play games or not

freesync and gsync are arguably more important than 144, but in everything that your monitor will push to 144 hrz, its VERY noticeable. However if the monitor is primarily gaming, a food free/gsync will dip into the low 20's high 10's, I know the one I used worked down to 18, and holy shit the game still felt responsive, wouldn't be fun to play there at all times, but god damnit did that feel nice.

Personally I don't see ips and tn as different enough to warrant adding 100-200$ on the monitors price, so if the decision comes down to a tn or ips and the difference is price, go the tn. Good tns match ok ips for color accuracy, and if you can rent or even but a calibrator, will likely be just perfect for your needs.
>>
>>57178780
2560*1600
>>
>>57184100
That is a fantastic resolution... however the only monitors to ever use it are over 1000$
>>
>>57184393
I got my screens for $270 each. Used business class screens are nice.

>>
>>57178780
1440p 144hz freesync is LITERALLY the optimum monitor right now
>>
>>57184457
having used a 144hz for non gaming tasks, holy shit is 60hz choppy as fuck
>>
>>57184513
But AMDshit cant handle 1440p 144hz
>>
>>57184554
Really? I thought it was just for games
>>
>>57184649
Holy shit, If you ever get the chance, plug a 144 in next to a 60 and move a window half way across the screen, the only problem is, if you don't own the 144, it will take weeks to months before you stop seeing the choppiness of 60

Im going to make a prediction here.
4K and its derivative 5k are going to be it for the pc market in terms of resolution on the consumer level until 8k is so trivial to make and push data to that the bump isn't felt. The next thing pcs are going to push is going to be hz backed by something like free/g-sync so in a game, you play it as fast as it can be played, outside, you get that smooth as butter hz rate.

contrast > hz = free/g-sync (their importance flips depending on your primary use if you can only afford one) > ips >>>>>>> monitors over 1080p

In terms of bang for your buck. contrast beats out color representation because you can easily get use to off colors if they aren't too off but the contrast from black to white, that's something you wont get use to and will constantly fuck you. I also find that in ips displays their viewing angles are just as bad as tn, though not that extreme the colors almost invert, having played a game on an ips, I was expecting to recline and not have to deal with the dark contrast going to fucking hell and back... but no the contrast is the first thing to go. instead of an ips if the tn is cheaper, put the money toward a good desk mount, so you can adjust angles based on how you want to sit. my main monitor is a samsung syncmaster t240hd, and I will never use a monitor without a mounting option again, so fucking sick of the bullshit with this, and by extension the ips'es i have used.

second is refresh, its noticeable in everything you do but if you game and can only afford one, the free/g sync matches displayed frames with when is ready, making games SO FUCKING RESPONSIVE that you don't care even if it dips to 1/3 what the monitor can handle.
>>
>>57184513
except you get stuck with an AMD card that cant even push the latest games at 1440p @144hz at good details
>>
>>57184780
Fuck. I just got a 1440p 60hz IPS
>>
>>57184816
not really, most games are more cpu bottlenecked then gpu, in dx11 nvidia isn't too far ahead of amd, though we may think they are because nvidia takes number 1 on benches largely due to the titan and previously the 980ti... the 1080 is largely equal to a 980ti if you had a founders version and not that far ahead if you had an after market because like it or not, nvidia doesnt clock linearly.

through drivers and new apis, even amd's old cards, shit that was never meant to compete with e generations new architecture is able to play with them, and amd still hasn't pulled out their high end.

now, on a side note with games, ever look at ultra and high settings in games? almost all of them high and ultra are un noticeably different but the performance hit is real, so put textures up to max, drop some aa because lets be real nearly all games you do not notice aliasing unless you specifically look for it.

>>57185406

well, you have better color, slightly better angles, possibly decent stand, and 1440, if you were on sub 1440, its an upgrade though just not as significant as 144hz would have been, you didn't do bad but could have done much better.

Programming/ Web and light gaming.
>>

contrast is somewhere around 700-830
enough input lag that it matters
when not at native resolution it performs like shit

1440p basically.

If you are a dumb normie 10 year old get 1080p.

Also the whole hifreq this is only needed if ur into gaming.

So I'm gonna build a pc soo with quite possibly overkill hardware. I7 6700k or maybe even its Kaby Lake variant and a GTX 1080 (maybe even a 1080ti if it comes any time soon). But I've been wondering if I should buy that Asus 27" 1440p 165hz gsync ips monitor or just keep my current 24" 1080p monitor. What does /g/ think I should do?
>>
>>57186344
What kind of "software" or things you do on your computer? With that type of hardware. It's pretty obvious that you should get the 1440p but in 144hz, 165hz is way too unnecessary.
>>
>>57186235
At least there's a 23.5" variation.

The screens beat to fuck but i cant get rid of it, just such a reliable old screen and response time is great and led backlight no fade or weird issues.

TN panel doesnt ghost at all but the fucking colors are horrid my 48" 2014 elcheapo LED TV does a better job

Any good 1440p 144Hz G-SYNC IPS monitors?
>>

Mostly virtualization and games. There was a 1440p 144hz ips monitor but it didn't have gsync last time I checked but freesync and only runs at 100hz with freesync enabled.
