I bought a MacBook Pro back in 2012 simply for the design. I like that its sleek and minimal and runs Debian well. Hardware wise, the new ones anger me. There is no reason they should not be sold with Skylake right now. The ordinary user who walks into an Apple store woukd not know what gen CPU they are getting and to pay the same price it was 3 years ago for a 3 year old chip is just robbery. We can talk again when the new ones are released. IF they are released.

>>
>>57178260
I second this. My MBP can run Windows/Linux VM's faster than any non-high-end-workstation-tier laptop running a native install, and still have better battery life.
>>
>>57178351
I know multiple people - including engineers - who have one, and they all hate those laptops. Nice try tho.
>>
>>57179528
If the new ones are released with the Macbook's keyboard like the rumors predict, you're going to see so much butthurt. I don't even mind losing the F-row to an OLED screen, but typing on that thing is painful after a few hours.

I assure you your MBP can't run OS X plus a Linux VM faster than my XPS with a native Linux install, nor have better battery life while doing it.
Source: I virtualize linux distros on an MBP at work. It's good, but your claims are laughable
>>
I don't think they are that overpriced, but I think they aren't really geared toward the customer who actually needs it for work or something demanding. it sells well because of the logo and high hardware specs, and good support for creative applications

but I don't think people who write a lot actually enjoy that garbage keyboard or the stupid trackpad and no nipple. I'm willing to bet actual professionals would rather have 50mm of thickness for a better keyboard and overall durability

people just want to show off that they can afford an apple. even when they can and really can't, a lot of girls just buy these things in installments with stupid high interest rates just so everyone at starbucks can see that they have an apple too. it's worth paying 3k for a 2k computer when you can take selfies of you writing some paper on your macbook© while enjoying a frap

Pro tip: You don't really need NVMe SSDs in a fucking laptop.

Pro tip: Most laptops don't have RAM soldered onto the motherboard.
>>
>>57179716
I don't know about you, but I know plenty of people who write a hell of a lot and genuinely like the keyboard. Both people who write natural languages and those who write code. I've had nothing but MBPs since 2011 and I've written loads and loads of code with it and actually like the keyboard so much I'm using an Apple keyboard on my Linux machine as well. Those 1980s style filcos or whatever are really just a meme for gay-murr kiddies and hipsters. Those who really want an ergonomic keyboard get one of those funny looking ones where the right and left sides of the keyboard are at different angles with a split in the middle.

Durability beyond MBPs, which are actually pretty tough thanks to the metal frame, is pretty niche market so that's not really much of a selling point on a general level. The status symbol thing may have been a thing back in the day before everyone and their mother had a Macbook, but that's long gone and people generally buy the machines (in my experience) for reasons of usability and aesthetics.
>>
>>57179802
1: If you want good performance you do

2: In 2010 maybe, not in 2016 anymore.
>>
>>57179851
Have you ever typed on a T420, T410 or T400?
I totally believe you somehow enjoy the shit keyboard on the MBP, I just have difficulty in believing you would prefer it to a proper thinkpad keyboard.
>>
>>57179870
>1: If you want good performance you do
so why are you using a shitty rmbp that doesn't have NVMe SSDs?
>>
>>57179851

>The status symbol thing may have been a thing back in the day before everyone and their mother had a Macbook, but that's long gone and people generally buy the machines (in my experience) for reasons of usability and aesthetics.

>usability

I know that my decades with MS and Linux make me biased, but for the life of me macOS/OSX just never felt intuitive. Everything feels so obfuscated by the interface, and finding individual files that aren't in the most surface-level folders/libraries is a chore. The only thing useful is the spotlight search function, but even then it doesn't make up for the shitty file explorer.

As for keyboards, I usually just plug in literally anything else I have on hand. Even a cheap logitech K120 feels better to type on than a macbook keyboard.
>>
>>57179877
Old thinkpads are different, but not actually more ergonomic. I've had thinkpads (last one was a T420) before my fist MBP and I can honestly say that from experience. You're obviously confusing preference for ergonomy here.

As I said, if you want a really ergonomic keyboard, you go for one of those funny looking things.

>>
>>57179924
I can't say that I've had an experience like that. I came from Windows when I got my first mac and due to the much different logic behind many things it felt annoying, but you eventually got used to it and realized that it felt annoying not because it was worse, but because it was different. If you really want to go deep inside file trees all the time you don't use the default view in finder (which is pretty similar to the default views in all recent versions of Windows and Linux DEs).
>>
>>57179924
>I know that my decades with MS and Linux make me biased, but for the life of me macOS/OSX just never felt intuitive. Everything feels so obfuscated by the interface, and finding individual files that aren't in the most surface-level folders/libraries is a chore.

That was my initial reaction aswell, but once you figure out the basics everything clicks. As a Linux veteran I mostly looked to the terminal rather than labor over figuring out all the GUI doodads. The results have been quite pleasant. It really is like a professional quality Linux distro with a lot of native proprietary stuff available you can't easily get on Linux without VMs or WINE futzing.

I don't feel any fanatical love for macOS or the hardware, but until there is a revived thinkpad classic I can't go back to windows OEMs.
>>
>>57179929
No, I'm definitely talking about ergonomics. I mean neither of us can prove it beyong the realm of subjectivity, but to me it seemed obvious it was much more comfortable long-term. I recently typed on my T410 again and I realized how shitty everything else had been in comparison.
>if you really want ergonomic
Oh come on. I agree that split keyboard with contoured layouts are the best if you type 10 hours a day, but we're talking about what we can get on a keyboard.
>>
>>57179941
No, it's trolling and you people keep falling for it.

The only way you get people posting copypasta threads to stop is by ignoring them.
>>
>>57179699
If you dual boot it will.
Also depending on what exact XPS you have they're both the same price which pretty much comes down to them being the same at the very least.
>>
>>57179985
If you can't actually prove something you can't really claim it ether, at not least without some serious caveats tacked onto the claim.

As I said, you're used to thinkpad keyboards and think they're more ergonomic so the placbo effect (which is very much a real thing) takes over and makes you feel like it actually is more ergonomic.

>>

Well can you prove it's placebo? It could perfectly be that thinkpad keyboards are more ergonomic. It would explain why the huge majority of posters who have tried both prefer thinkpads, why every reviewer I've seen comparing them prefered thinkpads, etc. I mean we can say that typing preference and ergonomy are totally separated things, but would that make sense? That your body would make you enjoy something that gave you physical pain?

All I've seen you post as well is emotional attachment as well, you LIKE your MBP's keyboard more. The fact that neither of us can right now prove either is more ergonomic than the other does not mean in any way they're equally ergonomic.

I love my old white MacBook (late 2009 version), but I bought a dell last year for $700.
The dell has a 15" 1080p display (not tn), 256gb ssd, quad core i5, and 960m graphics. It stays very cool and quiet with two fans and 3 vents. It's only 5 lbs and has pretty good battery life (about 6-7 hours).

Apple has great builds (probably the best) but the price/performance ratio can't compete with a lot of other brands.
As far as overall reliability goes, we'll see how the Dell holds up. My old MacBook is still a great machine.

I've had multiple macs and they've all been shit.

Take this from someone with years of mac experience.
They break fairly easily. Once they break they charge you 70% labor and 30% actual parts.

Took my 2012 Macbook air to get a battery replaced and had a small display issue. They wanted 800 some odd dollars for a battery and a simple fix. I could of bought a brand new mac for $899.

Decided to buy a Macbook Pro for school since thats the only thing macs are good at.

Never buy a Mac for anything but internet and Microsoft Office. Even then it struggles after a while. The cooling on the computers is awful. Macs are dog shit. Hence why I'm buying a new computer.
