The servers getting attacked are high level servers that mostly receive requests from other DNS servers rather than the general public to distribute load. The problem is that when these high level servers get DDOSed the other DNS servers drop their shit when it comes time to update their DNS records.

Any Internet connection can be DDOSed, so any server can be DDOSed.

The really big problem here is the one that Anna-senpai revealed with the release of Mirai - a shockingly, worryingly huge amount of Internet of Shit out there in the wild that can literally be pwned and turned into a (literal, not meme) DDoS botnet just by telnetting into it with a default password - yes, that's all that Mirai does. It's not any fancy exploit crap. It's just telnet.

Some fucking "future" we have, where the internet gets attacked by a bunch of video recorders, webcams, fridges and toasters.

I'm just saying, it would be a tremendous service to the internet at large if someone were to run Mirai and completely brick everything it can log into. Obviously it would be terrible and highly unethical. It's not so much that they are connected to the Internet as it is that they are addressable directly from the Internet, by default, with no configuration required, with the only security being a password that doesn't need to be changed.

I am not against the concept of IoT, there are many useful things you can do with it, but it's like no one thought of security. No one thought of what might happen when you connect millions of devices with little security to the Internet.
