How are some people getting under 300MB of RAM used?
I'm using i3 and I had nothing open except for Clementine and I'm using 1GB of RAM
git gud
Can't be too hard. I've just got plain Xubuntu installed and I'm using about 500MB even with Firefox. Kill Firefox and it drops down to 250MB.
a large chunk of that 1 gb could be just kernel cache
>>57176165
What. How. I have 530mb on idle
>>57176273
Which distro are you using? I'm guessing not something lightweight like arch.
>>57176346
Xubuntu.
>>57176120
Linux novice here. Using plain debian with bash shell.
Is that a top command? How do you rice top command?
>>57176597
it's htop
>>57176075
the question is why would you
>>57176613
Thx m8t
>>57176075
i3 here as well, I don't know what you're doing
i use 300 MB on Win 7 with my audio player and multiple background applications running ^~^
>>57176863
Neither do I.
According to $free -m I'm not really caching anything either.
>>57176075
That's because you are retarded. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Your filesystem is caching commonly used files.
tfw over 6 and a half gig used not really doing much
It's not a bad thing, OP. Don't let poorfags fool you.
>>57176075
With full KDE I only use ~600MB of RAM. Your inefficiency is impressive to me.
>>57178078
jordan you smelly faggot
>>57176120
r8 ram usage
note: fully riced web browser, mpd, etc
>>57176075
If you take out all of your RAM except 512 MiB then you will see <300 MiB usage. Your OS and applications will use as much RAM as they can, there is nothing wrong with this.
Can't believe how many people were fooled by the 90s meme of "free your memory" applications.
>>57176734
Btw you can customize some terms with a .Xresources file in your home dir. Not sure if htop has its own config but it might
>>57178172
Yes, and you can configure it from inside htop too.
>>57178228
>>57178075
>>57178078
Conversely you could say that extra RAM is only required because of induced demand, and is therefore wasted.
The idea of RAM caching is a waste on a desktop.
>>57178228
Well, he is a pass user.
>giving money to a company whose staff do it for free
What a shitshow.
>>57178272
The alternative? Doing free work for Google
>>57178252
Most Linux distros don't put everything in RAM like they would in an installation live disk.
>>57178092
What distro and kernel modules?
>>57178341
ram disks are used by default for /tmp on systemd distros
>>57178078
>bloat is good
>lel look at me I'm wasting resources, proving I'm not poor, just retarded
>>57176075
Manjaro will allow you to achieve greatness.
>>57176597

>>57176597
You shouldn't be using top anyway, it's a serious hog.
