I work as animator for middle sized company and when I really need to render something I can get almost 1000 xeon machines from the farm.

Imagine how much computing power they can buy and build server racks underground just to wait.

But not all is lost they way we work there is not really distributed rendering but it is split by task and they are usually very heavy. One machine will choke when it starts to load all assets. It is usual that hard disks will literally burn out and break because there has been too many requests on a single node.

Memes aside, you all know a Mirai botnet (mentioned here >>57183034 botnet and scanner for infecting poorly secured IoT devices, publicly released on skidforums a few weeks ago to draw feds off the scent of certain poodlecorp skids who had been using it, etc) has been confirmed as having been partially responsible for this attack right? I can agree with that, although it wouldn't fit the "Russian cyberwar" narrative to make an attack appear as though it originated from teenage script kiddie trolls, and it even seems minuscule in comparison to all the much more serious Russian-attributed hacks that have already happened. I think it kind of goes without saying that U.S. government and media is looking to pin every hacking attempt they can on Russia at this point, so it would be odd to use an attack this noteworthy to scapegoat a bunch of twitter trolls.

Honestly though, Occam's razor. Every skid on the internet now has access to the tools to create a botnet consisting of hundreds of thousands of devices, a botnet which has this month, just prior to it's public release, been implicated in a 1Tbps DDoS attack against OVH and a 620Gbps DDoS against KrebsOnSecurity. It's confirmed that any kid with enough money can now launch DDoS attacks nearing 1Tbps, is it unlikely that this would soon pose a problem for even the largest service providers? No, it's a given, and anyone who's been following the news of this skid happening has been waiting on an attack like this since the Mirai source code was published.
