I was forwarded a copyright infringement notice by my ISP today with a link to a "settlement" on a site called e-resolve.ca. I went to the link and it says I must pay $198. The letter also says they might press charges if I do not comply.

What can I do?
>>

>$198

You could have gotten much VPN for that

Now you have to deposit money directly into a rich jew's pocket
>>
>>57167056
pay it my man, it's totally legit and in no way someone's way to get some dumbass to fall for it and get some quick cash.
>>
>>57167113
The letter is from my ISP.
>>
>>57167056
do not open the link
do not call
and for the love of god don't be retarded enough to send them money

actually, just go ahead and do it. if you have to ask this question in the first place, just go ahead and part ways with your money

I work in drm at a telivision company and i can tell you that you are in for a world of hurt. Your isp is going to come at you with full force and they wont stop until you are behind bars. Copyright infringement is not a joke, 198 dollars is getting off easy.
>>
What ISP?
>>
>>57167113
>>57167067
if you pay you are admitting that YOU have been downloading illegal stuff.
Ignore them, they won't sue you for 198$ and most importantly they have no proof other than someone with your IP may or may not have downloaded copyrighted material.
I don't know about Canada (if you're from Canada) but here there's a law that basically says IP != person
>>
>>57167135
I already opened the link. How fucked am I?
>>
>>57167056
is there any proof it's from your ISP other than using their formatting? I mean have you rang them to verify?
>>
>>57167160
That's what I was thinking. I don't want to pay because it's an admission of guilt and I would be giving away my personal info to these people.
>>
>>57167182
exactly. do not incriminate yourself

It's from [email protected] so I imagine it's legit. Apparently in Canada, ISPs must now forward copyright notices to their clients.

your logic isn't compelling. ars technica covered exactly this kind of shakedown for years. here's a random article about it:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/06/porn-studio-that-sued-thousands-for-piracy-now-fighting-its-own-lawyer/

completely different logic than the kind you proposed was applied here: a lawyer could file blanket lawsuits on dozens or hundreds of people and scare them into settling for what must seem to them like a petty $1000 or so. what's a grand to keep my name out of a lawsuit involving some embarrassing pornography?

as an individual you have no leverage whatsoever. either get a lawyer and find others who are getting this shakedown treatment OR just pay them off. the judicial system is a bag of dicks, but this is where the OP is.

ahh, still though I doubt they'll do anything if you dont pay and they can't really prove it was you
>>
>>57167168
probably not very unless it's a scam, then you risk clicking a bad link
i've gotten something similar to this happen to me 4 times and nothing has ever happened when I ignored it every time
i've had friends get physical cease and desist letters in the mail and still not receive any sort of actual legal follow up.
but still, consider a vpn

how common are fax in Canada? what are the chances that the phone number in the contact page is also connected to a fax? I may send them a rare merchant if there's a decent probability they'll get it
>>
you have 0 obligation to pay anything

it's intimidation for gullible retards like (you).
>>
>>57167056
You owe me a hundred trillion yuan for copyright and patent infringement. Pay up.

Or do the same to me as to the faggots that send a bill. IGNORE.
>>
>>57167124

no, it's not.

and you have no reason to believe it is until they literally drag you in front of a judge.
>>
I deleted the email. I hope nothing bad happens.
>>
>>57167056
It's bullshit. Ignore or call your ISP and threaten legal action.

OP, read this.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/piracy-copyright-infringement-canada-1.3640434

>The purpose of the notice system is to discourage piracy — not to get cash.

>But right away, some anti-piracy companies started sending letters to suspected pirates, asking them to pay a settlement fee — sometimes hundreds of dollars.

>Calgary's Darren Mycroft told CBC Radio's Day 6 last year that he received four notices accusing him of illegally downloading porn movies.

>He said he didn't do it and chose to ignore the request to fork over $450.

>But other Canadians have paid up, mistakenly believing they were obligated to do so.

>The federal government publicly acknowledged the problem. "There is no obligation for Canadians to pay these settlements," then Industry Canada spokesman, Jake Enwright told Metro News last year.

>He also told both Metro and Reuters that the ministry was informing stakeholders that the letters shouldn't ask for money.

>But the demands for cash continue along with the threats that if Canadians don't pay, they could face legal action.
