Then you should not be running Win XP on that machine. Too much of a security risk, and hassle to maintain. Install Ubuntu with Unity (it's the only DE that doesn't have video tearing) and call it a day.

Well..you won't be able to run some software, XP support has almost universally been stopped by software vendors too, and XP 64bit in particular had some minor compatibility issues because it's based on Server 2003 and behaves like Server 2003 in some respects (virus scanners and some professional software will usually ask you to get the pricy 'corporate editions' because of that). JUst install Win7.
