is there any actual, practical reason for me to use free software, or is it just a /g/ meme?
>>
it usually works better than propietary alternatives
linux/bsd>other propietary kernels
vlc/mpv>other propietary media players
firefox/chromium>other propietary browsers
>>
Yes, I use free software to view, store and organize my waifu's image collection
If something goes wrong and basic diagnostics and solutions don't work I can check the source code of the programs I use, find patches on the internet or even fix the code myself. With free software I achieve 99.99% waifu availability, somethings which was impossible in the past with proprietary software.

what about just for your average user, who doesn't know how to program or check source code. will they see any actual benefits?

Less chance to be backstabbed by the devs as it can be forked.

>>57150615
Based mods.deleting weaboo pedophile images.
>>
>>57150736
You own free software.
If the devs start going in a direction you don't like, either you or someone who thinks like you will make a version that works like you want.
Example: Debian and systemd.

With closed source software, the owners are free to do whatever they want to your software. And there's literally nothing you can do.other than switch to other closed source that might do the same one day, or to open source and solve the problem once and for all.
Example: Windows 10

You don't need to see or know about the source code to take advantage of it being free. That it's free means that anyone can look at it and change it, not that you have to. There's no big company behind it doing who knows what.

If there's a big polemic change, it will be public. People will complain. And forks will be made.
>>
>>57150615
THANKS MODS
>>
>>57151016
just because anyone can look at or change it doesn't mean they will
if, as an average user, the dev decides to change something, and you don't know how to make your own version, you're still out of luck just as much as if it was proprietary.
so if you can't program, why bother?
>>
>>57151032
True. That people can look at it and change it doesn't mean they will.
But it being possible is better than it not being possible. With free software there's a chance. With proprietary, there's no chance at all.
>>
>>57151058
what i'm trying to say is, take other people out of the equation. if you don't know how to program, there's no difference in using free and proprietary software, except for quality (we all know free software just can't compete)
so why bother?
>>
>>57150615
Mods = the best
>>
>>57151071
But people are important. The whole point of free software is having people using it, contributing it to it, or whatever.
Of course, if you take people out of the question, then proprietary stands a chance. The only differences left are price and quality.
But people are always there. And if people aren't using a particular piece of software it's probably shit anyway.
>>
>>57150615
Can't wait for based mods to delete this shit thread too :^)
>>
>>57151187
so essentially the only option is "hope someone else has the same opinion on you AND hope they know programming AND hope they take the time to change the software to how you like it"
ok...
>>
>>57150615
Mods = based.
>>
>>57151223
Free software is not about assuring that no matter what, your software will go the way you want. It's the idea that knowledge should be free, and people should be able to modify it if they like.
You can chose to use proprietary instead, if you think free software isn't worth it. Just don't complain when the company behind whatever you're using is doing shit you don't like with your software, like using it to datamine you, and you're powerless to stop it.

I use Linux but often wonder this when I see people on IRC evangelising BSD. It seems like the primary reason to use BSD is if you get autistic about licenses and thing GPL is the devil, because nobody's actually given me any practical reason to switch from Linux to BSD.
>>
besides the license thing, freeBSD is like any ports based linux. zfs is slightly better than ext sometimes but having to run compatibility layers to run linux software kinda evens it out. its autistic to be evangelical about either
