Why would anyone buy a pi instead of a laptop for a home server?
>built in display that can be turned off
>built in UPS
>SATA
>Significantly better performance
>built in wireless
>cpu can be throttled down if power consumption is an issue
You can literally buy old junkers as cheap as a pi that'll destroy the ARM SoC.
>>57149685
Want to use a laptop as a server ? just do it, no need to get online aproval for that.
>>57149723
Just curious why others use a pi instead when this is clearly the better option
Power consumption. Size.
Why is better performance necessarily needed? It's dishing out data, not crunching numbers.

>Not tinu

No.
>>57149848
>5.5 to 45W Core2 Duo in a laptop designed to dissipate that amount of heat
>housefire
You're retarded.
>>57149838
>Power consumption
you can underclock/undervolt your CPU, and even disable cores in multicore CPUs
>>57149838
How about native sata?
>>57149848
You've only dealt with HP consumer and Dell laptops haven't you?
>>57150069
I have an older HP with an AMD cpu and ATI gpu running Fedora Linux.
It gets hot but it's not housefire.
>>57149685
Want to put a computer on your drone? Try doing it with a laptop instead of a pi.
>>57150146
Stop buying weak ass drones you baka
>>57149685
Why does anyone need a home server? Just save it on your PC dummy.
>>57149685
Low power, 40 dollars, small form factor, passively cooled.
>>57150352
srsly get of /g/
>>57150438
>he fell for the home server meme
>>57149685
I would focus on those titties.
>>57149685
>built in display that can be turned off
a remote shell is all you should ever need
>built in UPS
battery won't last very long plugged in 24/7
>SATA
>built in wireless
there are many boards with sata/wifi/bluetooth. just buy one of them instead of a pi.
>Significantly better performance
comes at a significantly higher price
>cpu can be throttled down if power consumption is an issue
why pay 10 times more than you could if you don't use the additional processing power anyway?
>>57150043
A raspberry pi is fucking 5V 0,6A. Up to 2A with a mechanical HDD. That's as much as a charging phone, if not less.
It cost less than 1€/year in electricity.
>>57149685
for the comfy of it.
pi meets every use case I've had so far: booting over network, own git, own web server etc and forces efficiency in scripts (tho pi3 + decent SD card performance enough so far, esp for the money).
laptop > pi for pdf viewing/shitposting/distractions.
>>57150671
Can you share your calculations?
>5V * 2A = 10W
>365 * 24h = 8760h
>10W * 8760h = 87.6kW*h
>87.6kW*h * 0.15 $/kW*h = $13.14
>>57150529
>a remote shell is all you'll need
Then don't use the screen, duh.
>built in ups
Change the battery, duh.
>baords that have built in features
Also cost a shitload more. DUH!
>significantly higher price
A core 2 laptop will destroy a pi in performance and can sometimes be found for cheaper.
>pay 10 times more
On what? You can annihilate a pi with a 50-60 dollar laptop. Are you telling me the rpi 3 costs only 5-6 dollars?
JESUS CHRIST MARIE I NEED ONE OF THEM CHEAP $5 PUTERS!
jesus, is she like 13?
>>57150165
Lol
>>57150887
why do you care so much about trying to prove your way is better, do you need approval that badly?
>>57150829
Cool, but that's headless.
While my ivy bridge celeron laptop takes 8-10W idle with screen on.
>>57149685
Power consumption, 30$, size, very cool, zero noise.
>>57150920
dem titties, tho
Why would you post a 12 year old wearing makeup?
>>57150931
I just see bullshit and I think to myself, "why would anyone lie on the internet".
>>57149685
A Pi is cheaper, consumes less and, of course, is way cooler.
You can use a laptop for other things, why waste it by having it lying around as a server?
>>57151104
that was my first post in this thread you nonce
>>57151118
And?
>>57149848
>>57150033
>implying no housefire
tell that to the 24/7 fucking hot AC adapter brick when it comes in contact with any kind of fabric to no burn your home to fucking ashes
>>57149737
[ approval not found ]
>>57150352
This.
>>57150438
Stop hoarding shit.
>>57151215
Potato!
>>57151526
The only way that an AC adapter would get hot enough to ignite something is if it's faulty.
>>57151623
Yes!
>>57149685
It literally does not matter for that application. Samba runs fine on both, yay.
>He doesn't rent a box in someone's Datacenter for $30 a month
How do you guys set your pi servers up? One pi connected to like an external drive or something? Can't imagine you can fit many chinese cartoons on a microSD card.
>>57152297
That's why a laptop with sata is so much better
>>57152297
USB 2.0 drive. It also only has 100Mbit networking.
